Hampden-Sydney Falls At Christopher Newport 6-5 In 10 Innings

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Sophomore Jay Beavers/Alexandria had two hits, including his first collegiate home run, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 6-5 non-conference baseball decision in 10 innings on the road at Christopher Newport University on Tuesday in Newport News. Junior Kieran Conway/Chesapeake took the pitching setback in relief for the visiting Tigers (3-3) against the host Captains (4-1).

H-SC scored five runs on eight hits in another closely-played contest between the two schools—the Tigers defeated CNU 3-1 on March 3 at home. The Garnet & Grey scored two runs in the first inning, one run in the fourth and two runs in the extra 10th inning. CNU had six runs on eight hits, scoring one run in the second inning, one run in the fourth, one run in the eighth and three runs in the 10th.

In the top of the first, freshman Lucas Burnette/Hurt (2-3) singled with one out and later scored when sophomore captain Ryan Boyce/Suffolk (1-2, RBI) drew a bases-loaded walk. Senior captain Ryan Clawson/Moseley (0-2), who had reached base when hit by a pitched, also crossed the plate during the at-bat courtesy of a sacrifice fly RBI by junior Trey Karnes/Mechanicsville (0-2, RBI).

In the top of the fourth, Beavers (2-5, 2 RBIs) opened the frame with his first collegiate home run, a solo shot to left field.

In the top of the 10th, freshmen Cameron Shields/Scottsville (0-1) and Tillman Butler/Culpeper (0-1) each drew walks to begin the at-bat before scoring runs with two outs when Beavers reached on an infield single to third base that included a throwing error on the play, as well—Shields crossing the plate with an earned run and Butler unearned courtesy of the error.

Sophomore Justin Woodall/Mechanicsville started and pitched the first 4.0 innings, scattering four hits and two runs, both earned, with four strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Ryan Portes/Midlothian tossed a scoreless inning, yielding no hits with no strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Tymothy Hart/Powhatan tossed another scoreless inning, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks. Freshman Aidan Williams/Suffolk tossed a scoreless inning, as well, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks. Sophomore Declan Kent/Charlottesville pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing no hits and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and two walks. Junior Jason Covaney/Williamsburg recorded one out, yielding no hits with no strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore Russell Bowles/Moseley also tossed a scoreless inning, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks. Conway (0-1) pitched the final two-thirds of an inning, allowing three hits and three runs, one earned with two strikeouts and one walk.

H-SC is scheduled to host Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent Ferrum College for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 13, beginning at 12 p.m. on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
