W&J improves record to 16-0 with doubleheader sweep of Geneva

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team completed the four-game sweep of Geneva College with a doubleheader sweep on Monday. W&J has won 16 straight games to open the 2021 season, which matches the school record for consecutive wins. 

W&J improves to 12-0 in PAC play and 16-0 overall. Geneva drops to 5-10 overall and 4-8 in league games. 

Game 1 - W&J 9, Geneva 5

The GT's opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning on a home run by Abram King. W&J evened the score with a pair of runs in the third inning. The Presidents first tally came on a throwing error by Geneva on a sacrifice bunt attempt. A sacrifice fly by Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) scored Logan Scheider (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) to tie the score at 2-2. 

An RBI groundout by Michael Zito (Nashville, Tenn./Hume-Fogg) scored Adam Morris (South Park, Pa./South Park) to give W&J a 3-2 lead in the fourth. Horvat laced a two-run single that plated Scheider and Gregovits to make it 5-2 in the fifth. 

Scheider helped W&J extend the lead to 7-2 in the sixth with an RBI single that scored Adam Moore (Olean, N.Y./Archbishop Walsh). A sacrifice fly by Scheider and an RBI single by Jason Gregovits (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) made it 9-2 W&J after seven innings. 

Geneva made things interesting with a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth. However, Zito recorded the final out for his fifth save of the season. 

Nick Drake (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) improved to 3-0 on the hill. The senior pitcher tossed seven strong innings in which he allowed two runs on three hits. He struck out three and walked three in the win. 

Ten of the 11 hits by W&J in game one were singles. Morris and Gregovits both finished with a pair of hits in game one to pace the offensive efforts. 


Game 2 - W&J 9, Geneva 0 

The Presidents jumped on the Golden Tornadoes in game two. Morris tripled to deep center to score Peter Kalinski(Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) to give W&J a 1-0 edge. An RBI groundout by Moore scored Morris to make it 2-0 after an inning. 

An RBI double by Alec Jackson (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) scored Jameson Campbell (Painesville, Ohio/Painesville Riverside) in the second. Kalinski tacked on an RBI doubled that scored Jackson to give the Presidents a 4-0 lead after two innings. 

Sam Quinn (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) doubled to score Campbell in the fifth to make it 6-0. Scheider and Nate Rush (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) added RBI singles in the fifth to extend the lead to 8-0. 

W&J finished with nine runs on 12 hits offensively in game two. Shane Fox (Valencia, Pa./Mars) earned the victory with 2.2 scoreless innings on the mound. Mason Kolbe (Bradenton, Fla./Out-Of-Door Academy), Kamden Kautz (Oro Valley, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge), Sam Stewart (Raleigh, N.C./Pro 5 Academy) and Ethan Boring (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) combined with Fox to shutout Geneva over the seven innings.
