Hampden-Sydney Wins On The Road At Virginia Wesleyan 16-3

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Junior Max Lipscomb/Virginia Beach and freshman Lucas Burnette/Hurt each had four hits and two RBIs, while junior Trey Karnes/Mechanicsville added three hits and three RBIs, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 16-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball road win at Virginia Wesleyan University on Tuesday in Virginia Beach. Freshman Aidan Williams/Suffolk started on the mound and earned the pitching victory for the visiting Tigers (12-9, 7-7 ODAC) with 8.0 solid innings and a collegiate-best eight strikeouts against the host Marlins (5-16, 5-9 ODAC).

H-SC scored a season-high 16 runs on 16 hits with no errors … scoring four runs in the first inning, nine runs in the second and one run each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. VWU scored three runs on seven hits with seven errors … scoring all three runs in the fourth inning.

In the first, Lipscomb (4-6, 2 RBIs) singled to left field to begin the contest and advanced to third base on a double to left center field by Burnette (4-4, 2 RBIs). Following a walk to sophomore captain Ryan Boyce/Suffolk (0-2) to load the bases with no outs, Karnes (3-5, 3 RBIs) promptly provided a two-run single to center field that scored Lipscomb and Burnette, and Boyce crossed the plate courtesy of a sacrifice fly RBI from senior captain Ryan Clawson/Moseley (1-5, 2 RBIs). Karnes, who stole second base before moving to third on a single up the middle by sophomore Jay Beavers/Alexandria (2-5, RBI), scored on a sacrifice fly RBI by freshman Tillman Butler/Culpeper (0-3, RBI).

In the second, Lipscomb and Burnette each singled with one out, and the bases were loaded once-again after another walk drawn by Boyce. Lipscomb scored on an infield single by Karnes, and Burnette crossed the plate via a wild pitch. Boyce was safe at the plate when Clawson reached on an infield single, and Karnes scored on an RBI single through the left side by Beavers. Clawson crossed the plate on a two-out, RBI single through the right side by senior captain Nick Grohowski/Chesterfield (1-5, RBI), and Beavers and Grohowski each scored when Lipscomb reached on a fielding error. Senior captain Matt Muehleck/Martinsville (1-3), who had walked, crossed the plate on a run-scoring single through the left side by Burnette, and Lipscomb would later score courtesy of a throwing error.

In the fifth, Karnes doubled to left center field and later scored with two outs via a wild pitch. In the sixth, Muehleck walked with one out, moved to second on a passed ball and on to third when Lipscomb singled to shortstop—scoring on an RBI single through the left side by Burnette. In the seventh, Butler walked with one out and later crossed the plate on another wild pitch.

Williams (1-1) started and tossed the first 8.0 innings, also a collegiate-best, scattering seven hits and three runs, all earned, with a career-high eight strikeouts and two walks. Junior Reese White/Lincoln, DE pitched the final scoreless inning, yielding no hits with one strikeout and one walks.

H-SC is scheduled to play at home on Saturday, April 17, hosting ODAC opponent Emory & Henry College for a doubleheader on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.
