LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sophomore Cam Furman (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) tossed five shutout innings as the No. 12 Randolph-Macon baseball team dropped a 3-1 ODAC decision at Lynchburg on Tuesday afternoon.

The Basics

Score: Lynchburg 3, #12 Randolph-Macon 1

Site/Venue: Lynchburg, Va./James C. Fox Field

Records: R-MC 15-5, 12-2 ODAC; LYN 20-8, 11-2 ODAC

How It Happened:

  • Both teams had opportunities to score early. Senior Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) had a leadoff single in the top of the first and stole second with one away but was stranded there. The Hornets had runners on first and second with two away in the bottom of the first. The runner on second tried to score on a base hit to left, but sophomore Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) threw to senior catcher Jacob Selden (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass), who made the tag and kept the game scoreless.
  • Lynchburg had a leadoff double in the fourth, but a lineout and a pair of groundouts stranded him at third.
  • The Yellow Jackets would break through in the fifth. Senior Reece Yeargain (Chester, Va./Benedictine) had a one-out walk and stole second. With two away, senior Shawn Nickles (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) singled to center to plate Yeargain with the game's first run.
  • The score remained 1-0 until Lynchburg got a three-run triple with two away in the seventh to take the lead.
  • R-MC would put two on with one away in the ninth, but a double-play ball ended the contest.

By The Numbers:

  • Three relievers combined to fan six over the final three innings.
