Baseball Cruises Past Neumann Behind Stellar Start From Bergenhagen

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Marymount University baseball team's offense surged behind a strong start from Ryan Bergenhagen on Friday afternoon, as the Saints rolled to an 11-3 win over Neumann University.

The victory pushed MU's record to 11-3 overall and 9-1 in Atlantic East Conference play. Neumann's overall record moved to 5-5 and fell to 2-5 in conference action.

Bergenhagen turned in a masterful performance for MU on the mound.  The senior surrendered just two runs over seven innings of work, one of which was earned. The 6-foot-1-inch-tall righty mowed through the Knights en route to a career-best 10 strikeouts.

The Saints responded to Bergenhagen's performance with a fireworks show at the dish. MU blasted five homeruns against the Knights to fuel its offense. Alex Lemery was the main culprit with a pair of no-doubt shots over the wall. The junior finished the day 2-for-3 with five RBI, two runs, and one walk.

Jordan DicksonJames DiGiulian, and Ryan Lee all tacked on homers for the Saints. For Dickson, the solo effort marked the first home run of his career. Bill Wojcik chipped in with a pair of hits and two RBI, while Bobby Leitzel added an RBI with a sacrifice fly.

Lemery got the scoring started in the third inning with a three-run shot that plated DiGiulian and Leitzel. Neumann pulled back a pair of runs across the fourth and fifth innings, but Lemery answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. Marymount piled on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Wojcik.

The game was firmly in hand from there, but after Neumann scratched across one run in the top of the eighth frame, Marymount officially put the game out of reach in the bottom of the inning. Dickson and DiGiulian gave the game its final 11-3 score line with back-to-back home runs.

Marymount continues its three-game set against Neumann with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 17. The first contest is scheduled to start at noon.
