No. 7 W&J sweeps Franciscan in Saturday twinbill

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team defeated Franciscan in a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games at Ross Memorial Park on Saturday morning and afternoon.
 
W&J moves to 25-1 on the season and 19-1 in PAC play. Franciscan falls to 11-11, 10-9 PAC.
 
The Presidents scored 27 runs over two games against Franciscan to back up strong pitching performances from Henry Litman (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and Tyler Horvat(Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford).
 
Game One – W&J 15, Franciscan 3
 
After both teams scored a run in the first inning, W&J sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs in the second. The Presidents rapped three-straight hits to begin the inning. Nate Rush (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) tripled, Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) doubled and Logan Scheider (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) singled.
 
Sante, Scheider and Horvat all scored when Horvat smacked a single into right field that was misplayed by the Franciscan outfield, which allowed all three baserunners to score to give W&J a 5-1 lead.
 
A two-run single by Luke Virag (New Kensington, Pa./Burrell) highlighted an eight-run fifth inning. Franciscan scored a pair of unearned runs in the sixth as the Presidents took home a 15-3 seven-inning win.
 
Horvat had three hits and scored four times. Kalinski had three hits, a double, two runs and two RBI. Sante had two hits, doubled, scored twice and drove in a pair.
 
Litman collected his sixth win of the season. He went 6.0 innings, allowed five hits, three runs (one earned) and had six strikeouts without surrendering a walk.
 
Game Two– W&J 12, Franciscan 0 
 
Horvat tossed seven scoreless innings to pick up his sixth win of the season in game two. The sophomore allowed six hits and struck out four. Horvat has not given up a run in each of his last three outings and currently sits at 22-straight innings without allowing a run.
 
The Presidents scored an unearned run in the first before a five-run second inning that was highlighted by RBI singles by Scheider and Kalinski.
 
Sante homered in the third. Adam Moore (Olean, N.Y./Archbishop Walsh) drove in a pair in the fourth and then homered in the sixth.
 
Moore finished with three hits, a home run, four RBI and a pair of runs. Sante went 3-for-3 with two runs, a home run and RBI. Scheider drove in a pair of runs with two hits.
 
Jonathan Haines (Arkport, N.Y./Arkport) worked a scoreless eighth and Johnny Nixon (Darlington, Pa./Blackhawk) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.
 
The Presidents conclude their four-game series with Franciscan tomorrow in Ohio.
