A Quick Look

The SUNY Oneonta baseball team was swept by SUNY New Paltz in a SUNYAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Red Dragon Field with scores of 1-0 and 6-3. The sweep drops the Red Dragons record to 10-8 overall with a 5-7 mark in league play.

The Inside Story

In game one, Oneonta freshman southpaw Michael Sadowski went this distance for the Red Dragons in his first collegiate start. Sadowski scattered just five hits and one run while striking out nine Hawks in the loss.  New Paltz scored the lone run of the ballgame in the top of the third when Justin Harvey scampered home from third on a wild pitch. Oneonta threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Patrick McGee made it to second base on dropped flyball, Skyler Daniello singled to center, but McGee was thrown out at the plate on a bang-bang play. Oneonta had six hits in the game, with Michael Sabatine and Sean Liquori collecting two apiece.

In the nightcap, Oneonta struggled to get the bats going as they were held to just three hits. The Hawks jumped on the board in top of the second when Ryan Geraghty scored from third on a fielder's choice. New Paltz added to their lead in the third when Dean Stalzer smacked a solo home run over the left field fence. New Paltz put three more runs on the board in the top of the fourth. The first run scored after the Hawks put runners on the corners for Matt Laurelli, who bunted home Michael Boccarossa on a safety squeeze. After a double steal put two runners in scoring position, Justin Ortiz plated a pair of runs with a single to left.

Oneonta scored their first run of the day in the bottom of the fourth on a Matthew McAllister RBI single to left. The Red Dragons made things interesting when they scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the New Paltz lead to 5-3. With the bases loaded and two out, Patrick McGee appeared to pop out to end the threat, but the ball was dropped, allowing Jake Barrett and Sean Liquori to score. After the Hawks scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh, Oneonta went down in order in the bottom of the inning as New Paltz completed the sweep.
