YORK, Pa. - After falling 6-1 in the opener, the Hood College baseball team forced a decisive game in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Quarterfinal series against top-seeded York (Pa.) with a 14-11 win in game two.
The Blazers and Spartans will meet at FCC Baseball Field in Frederick at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 2. The winner will advance to another three-game series on May 8-9 in the conference semifinals.
On the Mound
- Patterson turned in a strong effort in game two, pitching into the ninth. He struck out nine and walked three. After YCP loaded the bases in the ninth, all three runners inherited by the bullpen scored, leaving Patterson with eight earned runs in 8.1 innings. He also served as the designated hitter in the game, hitting a home run in the top of the ninth.
- In game one, Jahlin Jean-Baptiste allowed three unearned runs in six innings. He struck out six, walked three and gave up five hits.
At the Plate
- Jacob Saylor went 4-for-5 in game two with a home run, three runs scored and three RBIs. He finished 6-for-9 in the two games.
- Andrew Wenner led off game one with a home run and finished the day with two RBIs.
- Sam Wheeler had a pair of two-hit games to finish the day 4-for-7.
York 6, Hood 1
- Wenner led off the game with his fourth home run of the season to give Hood a 1-0 lead just four pitches into the contest.
- The run stood until the fifth, when a dropped foul ball opened the door for a three-run inning for the Spartans. After the two-out error extended Craig Wiley's at-bat, he singled to start the rally. He moved to second on a passed ball and tied the game when he scored on Jayden Cowan's single. Austin Denlinger followed with a two-run home run to put YCP on top 3-1.
- Denlinger added an RBI double in the seventh to make it 4-1. In the eighth, Joe Capobianco walked and Jimmy Wiegers drove him in with a two-run home run.
- After allowing Wenner's leadoff homer, Brandon Haggerty scattered five hits and a walk in a complete-game win.
Hood 14, York 11
- The Blazers scored a season-high 14 runs to send the series to a final game.
- York took a first-inning lead when Denlinger hit his second home run of the day to make it 2-0.
- Saylor did one better in the top of the second with a three-run shot that gave Hood the lead. After Wheeler singled and Nick Rampone walked to start the inning, York retired the next two batters before Saylor sent an 0-2 pitch the opposite way over the fence in right field.
- Hood added another three-run, two-out rally the next inning. Stephen Sommer and Patterson reached with before a pop up for the second out. Rampone and Chris Nalley had RBI singles, with two runs scoring on Nalley's base hit to make it 6-2.
- Sommer doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth before the Spartans' Jack Barry hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to make it 7-4.
- Alex Jenkins was hit by a pitch and Saylor singled in the sixth and, after a wild pitch, both runners scored on a single by Connor Hogan to stretch the lead to five.
- A fielder's choice off the bat of Wenner made it 10-4 after the top of the eighth. Denlinger went deep for the second time in game two and the third time during the day to lead off the bottom of the inning. Two more Spartans crossed home plate before the end of the inning to cut Hood's lead to 10-7.
- Patterson helped his own cause with a solo homer, his first of the season, to left to lead off the ninth. Wheeler and Rampone followed with back-to-back singles and with one out, Jenkins laid down a bunt single and the Spartans threw it away, allowing both runners to score for a 13-7 advantage and what proved to be the winning runs.
- Saylor singled and, with both offenses firing on all cylinders, the Blazers kept the pressure on. Saylor took off for second and the throw was cut off and returned home, but a good slide by Jenkins made it 14-7.
- York had a key base running error in the bottom of the ninth when a single to left turned into a fielder's choice when Hogan threw out a runner at third.
- With two runners on, Barry walked to load the bases, chasing Patterson from the game in favor of Ryan D'Allesandro. Capobianco was the next hitter and knocked in two with an RBI single to make it 14-9. Another single loaded the bases before D'Allesandro forced a flyout for the second out. Luke Turner drove in two more runs to cut the Blazers' lead to just three. Brett DeWees walked to bring the tying run to home plate. Joey Ricciardi, who was thrown out at third earlier in the inning, hit a fly ball to right center field where Rampone made the catch to preserve the win.
- In addition to multi-hit games by Saylor and Wheeler, Sommer and Rampone had two-hit games. Rampone added a walk and scored three times.
- Five players had two hits apiece for the Spartans.
- Robert Chaney pitched the first 4.1 innings, allowing seven runs, to take the loss for YCP.
