WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Pitching was the story for the Washington & Jefferson baseball team in a 2-1 win over the College of Wooster in the Presidents' Florida finale on Wednesday afternoon at historic Chain O Lakes Stadium.

The W&J pitching staff struck out 16 and held the Fightin' Scots to a season low in runs (1) and hits (5). The win improves W&J to 7-6 overall and drops Wooster to 6-4 overall

W&J missed an opportunity to take an early lead. Junior center fielder Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) stroked a leadoff double down the right field line and senior second baseman Jason Gregovits (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) reached base on an infield single. Both players advanced 90 feet on a double steal with one out but were stranded in scoring position.

The Fightin' Scots tallied the game's first run in the bottom of the first. Ben Gbur doubled and stole third before scoring on a double play by Tyler Chumita.

W&J evened the score in the top of the third when they manufactured a run. Junior third baseman Logan Scheider(McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) reached on a hit by pitch to start the inning and moved to third when the Wooster first baseman mishandled a throw on a sacrifice bunt by Horvat. Two batters later, senior catcher Peter Kalinski(Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) sent a fly ball to center field for a sac fly to score Scheider and tie the score at 1-1.

The score remained tied at 1-1 until the top of the sixth inning. Kalinski led off with a single before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore right fielder Roman Samson (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) came through with a clutch two-out RBI single to shallow right field that plated Kalinski to give W&J a 2-1 edge.

Senior pitcher Jameson Campbell (Painesville, Ohio/Painesville Riverside) put together his second strong outing of the trip. He worked 6.0 innings and allowed just one run on four hits. Campbell struck out six.

Senior pitcher Henry Litman (Marietta, Ga./Walton) pitched out of trouble in the seventh. After hitting the leadoff batter, Litman struck out the side to escape with a 2-1 still intact. Litman punched out Wooster All-American Tyler Chumita on a 3-2 pitch for the second out.

Freshman right-hander Dante DiMatteo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) recorded the final six outs in order for his fourth save of the season. DiMatteo struck out five including the side in the ninth inning. He has yet to allow a hit in 10 innings this season.

Samson recorded a multi-hit effort to lead W&J offensively.

The game was the first between two perennial Mideast Regional contenders since May 17, 2013 when the Presidents eliminated the Fightin' Scots from the NCAA Regional with an 8-7 win in Terre Haute, Ind. The game was the sixth between the two teams

W&J is slated to open Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday when they host Saint Vincent College for a doubleheader at Ross Memorial Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
