HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior captain Trey Karnes (Mechanicville) hit a three-run double in the third inning to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 3-2 non-conference baseball victory at home past nationally-ranked No. 19 Christopher Newport University on Wednesday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Freshman Justin Reynolds (Virginia Beach) started on the mound and gained the pitching triumph with the first 5.1 innings, and senior Kieran Conway (Chesapeake) earned the save with the final scoreless inning for the host Tigers (15-6) against the visiting Captains (15-6).

H-SC, getting votes in this week's Collegiate Baseball/ABCA Division III Poll, scored three runs on six hits with two errors … scoring the three runs in the decisive third inning. CNU, ranked 19th in this week's Collegiate Baseball/ABCA Division III Poll, scored two runs on six hits with one error … scoring the two runs in the third inning, as well.

Highlights for the Tigers included the clutch, bases-clearing double down the left field line with two outs in the bottom of the third by Karnes (1-4, 3 RBIs). The hard hit ball into the corner scored senior Ethan Badin (Richmond) (1-4), freshman Matthew Arnold (Danville) (2-4) and junior captain Ryan Boyce (Suffolk). Badin and Arnold had each singled with one out, while Boyce reached on a fielder's choice just ahead of Karnes stepping to the plate and providing what proved to be the difference in the well-pitched and closely-played contest. H-SC used four pitchers who combined to allow just two unearned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.

Reynolds (2-1) started and pitched 5.1 solid innings for the win, scattering three hits and two runs, both unearned, with five strikeouts and four walks. Reynolds' 5.1 innings was a season-high, and his five strikeouts match his season-best. Sophomore Jack Bourdon (Madison) tossed 1.2 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with no strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Dylan Robbins (Mechanicsville) pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing two hits with no strikeouts and no walks. Conway (3) tossed the scoreless and hitless ninth inning with two strikeouts and no walks.
