#1 Marietta knocks off #21 Denison for the second time this week

MARIETTA, Ohio — For the second time this week, No. 1 ranked Marietta College defeated No. 21 Denison University in non-conference baseball action. The Pioneers posted a 7-2 win on Sunday (April 3) afternoon at Pioneer Park. Marietta beat Denison in Granville on Tuesday.
 
The Etta Express has won five straight games and is now 19-3 on the season. Denison falls to 11-7 overall.
 
Marietta scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed in the game. Turner Hill led off with a triple to the wall in left-center and then scored when Damian Yenzi smacked a double down the rightfield line.
 
Zach Boyd reached on an infield single sending Yenzi to third base. Yenzi scored on a groundout to the shortstop. Brett Carson lined a double down the leftfield line plating Boyd with the fourth run of the inning.
 
Denison got on the board in the third inning. Eric Colaco doubled and stole third. He scored on an RBI single from Ari Fierer.
 
The Pioneers got the run back in the fourth inning. Alex Richter reached on a one-out single. Richter was picked off first but was safe at second when the Big Red dropped the ball. Drew Wilkinson singled to center moving Richter to third and then a groundout from Hill allowed Richter to score.
 
Carson started on the mound and worked 4.0 innings giving up two runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out five. Denison's first two batters in the fifth singled off Carson sending Marietta to the bullpen for All-American closer Sam Mathews.
 
Mathews got the first batter he faced to groundout allowing Colaco to score from third making it 5-2. Mathews (2-0) would shutout the Big Red the rest of the way for the win. He pitched 5.0 innings and allowed no runs on three hits with four strikeouts.
 
The Etta Express added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh for a 7-2 lead. Yenzi worked a one-out walk and moved into scoring position on a single from Boyd. Walks to Logan Vietmeier and Carson scored Yenzi. Drew Holderbach drove in the final run with a sac fly.
 
Kenny Lippman (1-1) started on the mound for Denison and took the loss. He gave up four runs on seven hits and struck out three in 3.0 innings of work. Three other pitchers saw action for the Big Red.
 
Yenzi, Boyd, Carson and Wilkinson each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers. Yenzi doubled and scored twice, Boyd scored twice, while Carson doubled and drove in two runs.
 
Marietta travels to Cleveland on Wednesday (April 6) for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at Case Western Reserve University.
