Edgewood College Splits 2022 Home Opener with Rockford

VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College Baseball team secured a split with Rockford University in the 2022 home opener on Sunday at Stampfl Field. The Eagles dropped the opener, 5-2, before the bats warmed up in game two, resulting in a 10-5 win.

EAGLES 10, REGENTS 5 (GAME TWO)
- The Eagles (9-6, 3-1 NACC) trailed 2-0 heading into the fifth inning, but they would score in each of their final four trips to the plate en route to the 10-5 win. Edgewood College took the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Kyle Sagan delivered a game-tying triple before Joseph Kalafut put the Eagles up 3-2 with an RBI double.

- Alex Prindle gave Edgewood College a 5-2 lead in the sixth inning when he belted a two-run home run to right field. Kalafut would add on to the lead in the seventh with a no-doubter to right, putting the Eagles in front 6-2. Rockford (6-4, 1-1 NACC) would get back into the game in the top of the eight on a three-run blast by Aaron Monti, but the Eagles responded with a four-run bottom half for the 10-5 final.

- Kalafut delivered another run-scoring hit in the four-run eighth as he finished the game 4-for-5 with a double, home run, and three RBI. The Eagles top four hitters (Connor Goodwin, Prindle, Sagan, Kalafut) were locked in, combining for 12 hits, eight RBI, and eight runs. Goodwin was 3-for-5 with a double, Prindle went 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI, and three runs scored, while Sagan went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.

- Leo Stone earned the win, pitching five strong innings. He allowed four hits and two runs (one earned), while striking out three. Garrett Redner delivered three relief innings, while Conner Dunfee tossed a scoreless ninth.

- Jared Herzog paced the Regents at the plate with three hits, while Monti's home run was his only at-bat of the game, a pinch-hit situation in the eighth.

REGENTS 5, EAGLES 2 (GAME ONE)
- Herzog was the star of the opener as the Regents left-hander went the distance on the mound. He allowed just three hits and struck out 11 in picking up his second win of the season. Kyle Jungers (2-1) was strong for the Eagles as well, throwing eight strong innings, giving up four earned, while striking out eight. Nick Holland worked a scoreless ninth for the Eagles.

- Rockford built a 3-0 lead thanks to a run in the first and two in the third, those two coming on a two-run home run by Joseph Stagowski.

- The Eagles chipped away with runs in the sixth and seventh innings to cut the Rockford lead to 3-2. Kyle Semrad belted a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh for the Eagles. Rockford would answer with two insurance runs in the top of the eighth, but it turned out Herzog didn't need the insurance as he closed out the win.

- Max Hoeser added a double for the Eagles in the opener. Stagowski was the Regents top hitter, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

- The Eagles will play a pair of single non-conference games this week before getting back to conference play next weekend. The next Edgewood College game is scheduled for Tuesday, April 5 at UW-Platteville. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
