ABILENE, TEXAS – Four players turned in multiple-hit outings to support a seven-pitcher, six-strikeout performance in non-conference play for McMurry University Tuesday, Feb. 28.
The War Hawks, giving first-year head coach Josh Lee his first home victory at the helm, battled back from a 6-4 deficit midway through the clash on a near-perfect evening weather-wise at Walt Driggers Field. Freshman first baseman Noah Hamel (Cibolo, Texas) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. A second run was plated due to an infield error by the University of Dallas in the bottom of the fifth to tie the contest at 6-6. An inning later, junior catcher Drake Warner (Royse City, Texas) lined a shot off the right-center field wall, sending in two scores with a triple that gave the Maroon and White an 8-6 advantage.
That lead managed to stand up behind the steady bullpen work of sophomore Titus Ashton (Flint, Texas), freshman Jerek Pena (Ira, Texas), and sophomore Dalton Enberg (Llano, Texas). The trio wasn't touched for a hit, didn't allow a free pass, and struck out one Crusader hitter between them to make a winner out of sophomore Grayson Winter (Buda, Texas).
Adding to the headlines for the War Hawks and their third straight victory was freshman designated hitter Zach Spradling (Buda, Texas), who homered and scored three runs; Hamel, who tallied two hits and scored twice; sophomore outfielder Casey Turner who produced three hits, score once and drove in a run; and sophomore shortstop Dylan Lee (Hutto, Texas) who cracked a double and triple and drove in two runs. The quartet bolstered an 11-hit attack.
The War Hawks (3-7) return to American Southwest Conference action Saturday and Sunday, March 4 and 5. They travel to the University of Texas at Dallas for a 12 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and a single nine-inning contest Sunday at 12 p.m.
