Dutchmen Baseball Defeats Rhode Island on Walk-off Single

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Duncan Weir knocked in Kenny Palmieri with the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth to give the Lebanon Valley baseball team a thrilling 5-4 victory over Rhode Island College on Thursday morning in Port Charlotte.

The Anchormen (4-5) got on the board first as they were able to get an unearned across in the top of the first inning. The Dutchmen (2-6-1) loaded the bases in the second inning as Shane Stossel and Andrew Miles singled before Logan Brewer drew a two-out walk. Stossel then scored the tying run on a wild pitch before the Anchormen were able to get out of the inning. The game remained tied at one until the fifth when Rhode Island was able to manufacture a run on a walk, single, and then a sacrifice fly to left.

LVC stormed right back with a three-run inning in the bottom half of the fifth to take their first lead of the day. Nico Santoro knocked in Logan Fuga with a single to center. The senior then stole second before trading places with Jace Fetterman who doubled to left. Stossel knocked in Fetterman with a single to left to finish the scoring in the inning. The Anchormen scored a run in the seventh and another run in the eighth to tie things up at four.

Brewer led off the bottom of the ninth with a single up the middle. Palmieri pinch ran for Brewer and advanced to third on a Santoro single through the left side that was just out of the reach of the shortstop. Weir then recorded his first hit of the day with a single to left field setting off a celebration from the bench.

  • Santoro recorded his team-leading fifth multi-hit game of the year with two hits, a run scored, and an RBI.
  • Fetterman went 1-3 at the plate with a walk, a run scored, and an RBI.
  • Miles had two hits for his third multi-hit game of the year.
  • Santoro has now hit in all four games to begin the season finishing the day with two and a run scored.
  • Jacob Horton struck out three in 4.1 innings on the mound in his first start of the year. He allowed one earned run on four hits.
  • Brendan Landry struck out one and walked two with one hit in 1.2 innings. Hunter Tipton pitched two innings and struck out two.
  • Jacob Detwiler earned his first collegiate win with a scoreless ninth.
