How It Happened

  • After the Panthers went down in order in the top of the first, the Yellow Jackets took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame. Senior Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) had a leadoff single, stole second, and was sacrificed to third by freshman Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's). Webb was hit by a pitch and junior Hunter Cole (Norfolk, Va./Granby) drew a walk to load the bases. With two away, senior Carter Johnson (Southampton, Va./Southampton) walked to bring home Iannuzzi with the game's first run. Sophomore Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) delivered a single that plated Webb and Cole to push the lead to 3-0.
  • Webb led off the third with a long homer to left, his second of the season, to make it 4-0. Cole walked, went to second and third on wild pitches and came home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Chaz Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./Miller School) to extend the lead to 5-0. Johnson doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored in a groundout by Lautenschlager as RMC went up 6-0.
  • After Ferrum tallied a run in the top of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets responded in the bottom of the inning. Schmitt had a two-out single and went to second on an errant pickoff throw to first. Webb doubled to drive in Schmitt, and Cole had a two-bagger to knock in Webb as RMC went up 8-1.
  • The Panthers scored four times over the next three innings to pull within three at 8-5. The Yellow Jackets added two insurance runs in the seventh. Cole had a leadoff walk and went to second on a base hit by Harvey. Lautenschlager was plunked to load the bases and sophomore Aidan Pinto (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) was hit by a pitch to drive in Cole. Junior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) had a sacrifice fly to plate Harvey and make the score 10-5.
  • In the eighth, Schmitt had a leadoff single and scored on a base hit by Harvey to make the final 11-5.
  • Junior Drew Ramos (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) was the starter and winner for RMC, going 5.0 innings with four hits, two runs, one walk and seven strikeouts.
