Hampden-Sydney Splits Doubleheader At Bridgewater; Winning Nightcap 14-9 After Dropping Opener 5-1

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Senior captain Ryan Boyce (Suffolk) and junior Lucas Burnette (Hurt) each hit home runs with four RBIs each, as well, in game two, as Hampden-Sydney College split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader on the road at Bridgewater College to complete the regular season on Monday in Bridgewater. Senior Owen Tappy (Charlotte, NC) gained the pitching win in relief during the 14-9 triumph in the nightcap, while freshman Jake Williams (Chesapeake) took the mound setback in the 5-1 opener for the visiting Tigers (20-17, 13-9) against the host Eagles (16-24, 9-13). It's the second consecutive 20-win season for H-SC, and the 12th under the direction of 20th-year head coach Jeff Kinne (401-351-6, 206-163-1).

In game one, H-SC scored one run on five hits with one error … scoring the lone run in the ninth inning. BC scored five runs on nine hits with one error … scoring two runs in the third inning and three runs in the eighth.

In the ninth, Boyce was hit by a pitch with one out, advanced to second base on a single to center field by sophomore Christian Lancaster (Danville) (2-4), and moved to third on a ground ball out off the bat of freshman Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) (1-4). Boyce scored with two outs courtesy of a wild pitch to provide for the final margin.

Williams (0-1) started on the mound and pitched the first 3.0 innings, scattering three hits and two runs, both earned, with two strikeouts and two walks. Junior Jack Bourdon (Madison) tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, yielding two hits with no strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Michael Hagin (Richmond) pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit with no strikeouts and no walks. Senior Tymothy Hart (Powhatan) tossed the final inning, yielding three hits and three runs, all earned, with one strikeout and one walk.

In game two, H-SC scored 14 runs on 16 hits with two errors … scoring six runs in the third inning, two runs in the fifth, five runs in the seventh and one run in the ninth. BC scored nine runs on 15 hits with two errors … scoring one run in the second inning, three runs in the fifth, three runs in the seventh and two runs in the ninth.

In the third, junior Trent Jones (Virginia Beach) (3-4, RBI) singled through the right side with one out, stole second base, and scored on an RBI single up the middle by sophomore Grayson Harris (Moseley) (1-6, RBI). Harris then advanced to second when sophomore Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (1-5) singled to center field, and both he and Harris crossed the plate ahead of Boyce (2-4, 4 RBIs), who slammed his fourth homer of the season—a three-run blast to left field. Lancaster (1-4) followed with a single to center field, and moved to second when Farr (1-3) reached on a fielding error, then scored on an RBI single to center field by senior captain Jay Beavers (Alexandria) (2-5, RBI). Farr would later cross the plate with two outs after Jones was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a 6-1 advantage.

In the fifth, junior Cameron Shields (Scottsville) (1-4) reached on a two-out single to right field and scored ahead of Burnette (2-5, 4 RBIs), who hit his first collegiate homer over the fence in left field to make it an 8-1 lead.

In the seventh, sophomore Mark Warren (Norfolk) (1-2) singled through the left side as a pinch-hitter to begin the at-bat, advanced to second base when Beavers also singled through the left side, and both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Shields. Burnette then plated both Warren and Beavers with a two-run single up the middle, and Burnette advanced to second when Jones singled down the left field line—both would later score courtesy of two-out wild pitches. Masterson drew a walk during the at-bat and scored on an RBI single to center field by sophomore Eric Mayer (Glen Allen) (1-2, RBI), who was pinch-hitting for the Tigers, to increase the margin to 13-4.

In the ninth, Jones led off with a single to center field and later crossed the plate on a two-out, RBI double down the right field line by Boyce to provide for the final margin.

Senior Justin Woodall (Mechanicville) started on the mound and pitched the first 2.0 innings, scattering three hits and one run, earned, with four strikeouts and no walks. Tappy (6-1) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding two hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore Dylan Robbins (Mechanicsville) pitched 1.0 inning, allowing four hits and three runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Classmate Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) tossed 2.0 innings, yielding four hits and three runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and two walks. Senior Davis Ferguson (Rocky Mount) pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing no hits with no strikeouts and one walk. Classmate Russell Bowles (Moseley) pitched the ninth inning, allowing two hits and two runs, both earned, with one strikeout and no walks.

H-SC will next play in the ODAC Tournament Quarterfinals as the No. 5 seed against No. 4 seed and (currently) nationally-ranked No. 10 Randolph-Macon College. The Best-of-Three series is scheduled for this upcoming weekend on either May 5-6 or May 6-7 in Ashland—complete details will be available on Tuesday.
