DEMOREST, Ga. – Senior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) was a triple short of the cycle with three runs and four RBI as the Randolph-Macon baseball team defeated Hanover 16-1 on Sunday to give head coach Ray Hedrick his 460th career victory, a program record.
The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 16, Hanover 1
Venue: Loudermilk Field
Records: RMC 3-2, HC 1-2
How It Happened:
- The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the bottom of the third. With one away, freshman Jon Quici (Philadelphia, Pa./Conestoga) reached on an error. Quici moved to second on a base hit by sophomore Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) and came home on a base hit by junior Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudon Valley) to give RMC a 1-0 edge. With two outs, Webb doubled to knock in Schmitt as the Yellow Jackets went up 2-0.
- The Panthers loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fourth, but a lineout to short started a 6-4 double play and a foul out to first thwarted the rally.
- After HC plated a run in the top of the fifth, RMC responded in the bottom of the frame. Quici drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-1 advantage.
- RMC kept the offense going in the sixth. Webb drew a leadoff walk and, with one away, stole second. He advanced to third on a bunt single by senior Richie Dudley (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) and scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 4-1. Senior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) walked and sophomore Eli Brooks (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) bunted for a base hit to load the bases. Quici was hit by a pitch to bring home Dudley, giving the Yellow Jackets a 5-1 advantage. Schmitt singled to drive in Bush and Brooks to make it 7-1. Lautenschlager reached on an error to knock in Quici as the lead grew to 8-1. Webb went deep for RMC's first home run of the season to score Schmitt and Lautenschlager, making it 11-1.
- The Yellow Jackets put up another crooked number in the eighth. Sophomore Jordan Hill (Norfolk, Va./Granby) had an RBI single and sophomore Nathan Chen (South Riding, Va./Freedom) added a run-scoring double to highlight the five-run outburst as the game ended 16-1.
