Hopkins Breezes Past Cairn, 12-1

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins baseball team hosted Cairn in the final tune-up before its spring break trip Monday afternoon, capitalizing on a number of Highlander errors to secure a comfortable, 12-1 win.

After Cairn (4-5) tacked on one of its three total hits in a scoreless top half of the first, the Blue Jays (5-3) put two on the board in the bottom of the frame and never looked back. Matthew Cooper registered Hopkins' first hit of the day on an infield double that the wind took control of before a walk drawn by Dillon Souvignier put runners on first and second with one out. The Blue Jays' next two batters — Jimmy Stevens and Lukas Geer — both hit grounders, but errors on the force attempt at second allowed both Cooper and Souvignier to score to put the Jays in front 2-0.

Hopkins added a pair of runs in the second and third innings on another error and sacrifice fly from Shawn Steuerer to take a 4-0 lead into the fourth where — in his final inning of work on the mound — Ryan Anderson let two men on before striking out the final two to keep the shutout intact.

Bearden Awadzi entered in relief in the fifth, tossing a perfect opening inning before allowing his lone hit of the afternoon — a home run to right field — to put the Highlander on the board. Responding with another crooked number in the bottom of the inning, however, were the Blue Jays.

Tripp Myers started the rally with a single that popped over the first baseman's head, scoring on a Cooper double to left center. The graduate student advanced to third on a Souvignier single before Stevens did the same to score Cooper and reload the corners. Hopkins' third and final run of the inning came via Geer, who singled through the left side to score Souvignier and put the Blue Jays up 7-1.

Awadzi made quick work of Cairn in the seventh before relief pitcher Quinn Rovner did the same in the eighth, with another wild bottom of the eighth all but putting the game out of reach. Kickstarted by Myers getting hit by a pitch, the Jays brought five across home plate on three hits and two more Highlander errors to take the commanding 12-1 lead.

Rovner re-entered in the ninth, putting down Cairn's batters in order to clinch the 12-1 win.

Next up for Hopkins is its spring break trip to Florida where the Jays will continue to challenge themselves, taking on several talented opponents. Hopkins' first game against Mitchell is Thursday, March 14, with first pitch set for 3:30 p.m.
