Maroon Baseball outlasts Generals in 14 to earn DH split

The Game Facts:

The Short story: Junior Tucker Schiavoni laced a two-out double to score the winning run in the bottom of the 14th inning of game two Saturday as the Roanoke College baseball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader with visiting Washington & Lee University. The Generals won the first game 14-6 and rallied to force extra innings in the nightcap, but Schiavoni's hit gave Roanoke a 5-4 win.

How it happened (Game 1):
*The Generals plated eight runs in the first three innings to go ahead 8-0 before RC started to chip away.
*Hayden Giordano hit a solo homer to start the scoring in the fourth and Roanoke added runs later in the frame on a Cayden Freels double and a Dylan Bonzon bases loaded walk.
*Freels brought in two more in the sixth on a two-out single and Jonny Wall cut the lead to 8-6 with an RBI base hit in the sixth.
*W&L put the game out of reach with two in the seventh and four in the ninth.

Inside the numbers (Game 1):
*Giordano was 4-5 with a double and a home run.
*Kyle Moshier and Bonzon each had three hits.
*Jacob Jackson went 5-6 for W&L with a double, a home run, three runs and three RBI.

How it happened (Game 2):
*The Maroons went up 1-0 in the second inning on a wild pitch but W&L countered with one run in the fourth on an infield single.
*Freels drilled a solo homer in the fifth to put RC ahead 2-1 but again the Generals tied it up with a run in top of the seventh.
*A Corey Coogan two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh gave the Maroons a 4-2 lead, but W&L forced extra innings with a run each in the eighth and ninth innings, both with two outs.  

Inside the numbers (Game 2):
*Sophomore Isaac Brooks earned the win for Roanoke, tossing four scoreless innings and allowing just one hit.
*Jackson Murphy got the start on the mound and gave up just six hits and two earned runs with no walks and six strikeouts.
*Wall, Kyle Moshier, Freels and Nate Prince each had two hits.
*Sims DeLong threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen for W&L (11-12/5-8 ODAC).

Up Next:
*Roanoke (13-12/8-2) hosts Methodist University in non-conference play Tuesday at 4 p.m. in a non-conference game to be played at Franklin County High School.
