Hampden-Sydney Drops Doubleheader At Mary Washington 6-3, 12-0

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Jack Wilson (Petersburg) had a home run and three RBIs in the first game, while freshman Jase Howell (Portsmouth) had two hits in the second game, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a non-conference baseball doubleheader on the road at the University of Mary Washington on Saturday in Fredericksburg. Sophomore Jackson Barnett (Ashland) took the pitching setback in the 6-3 opener, while freshman Adam Emhoff (Chesapeake) took the mound loss in the 12-0 nightcap for the visiting Tigers (11-17) against the host Eagles (22-8).

In game one, H-SC scored three runs on six hits with one error … scoring two runs in the first inning and one run in the fifth. UMW scored six runs on 10 hits with two errors … scoring two runs in the third inning and four runs in the seventh.

In the first, junior Grayson Harris (Moseley) (2-5) began the contest with a single to right field and scored when Wilson (1-3, 3 RBIs) promptly followed with a two-run home run to left field—his team-leading fourth homer this season—for an early 2-0 advantage.

In the fifth, Harris reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base, advancing to third on an error, before crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly RBI to left field by Wilson for a 3-2 lead.

Junior team captain Christian Lancaster (Danville) (1-3) had a triple in the opener for the Garnet & Grey.

Barnett (1-1) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 6.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and six runs, five earned, with a career-high seven strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Hank Blanton (Midlothian) tossed the final 1.1 scoreless innings, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks.

In game two, H-SC scored no runs on seven hits with one error. UMW scored 12 runs on 11 hits with no errors … scoring five runs in the first inning, one run in the second, and three runs each in the fifth and sixth innings.

Howell (2-4) had two hits in the nightcap for the visitors.

Emhoff (2-4) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first two-thirds of an inning, allowing three hits and five runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Alex Caruso (Appomattox) followed with 2.1 innings, scattering three hits and one run, earned, with two strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Ty Herndon (Richmond) tossed 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and three runs, one earned, with one strikeout and one walk. Senior Ryan Portes (Midlothian) pitched 1.0 inning, yielding three hits and three runs, all earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Freshman Logan Benton (North Chesterfield) tossed a scoreless inning, allowing no hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Junior Dylan Robbins (Mechanicsville) also tossed a scoreless inning, allowing no hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

H-SC returns home to welcome ODAC opponent Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday, April 17, at 3:30 p.m. on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
