William Paterson Falls Behind Early, Drops Decision to Rutgers-Newark

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (7-23, 2-9 NJAC) fell behind early and couldn't recover, suffering a 10-4 loss to visiting Rutgers-Newark (16-15, 1-10 NJAC) April 18.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Scarlet Raiders opened the scoring with a first-inning solo home run.
  • Rutgers-Newark added five more during the top of the second inning with a walk, base hit, double, two bunt singles, double and base hit.
  • A two-out error led to a 7-0 score in the top of the seventh.
  • The Pioneers got on the scoreboard during the home half of the seventh when junior pinch hitter RJ Mehnert singled to left, advanced to third on a Christian Hay base hit up the middle, and scored on a Jake Lutz sacrifice fly to deep center.
  • Three singles and a walk netted the Scarlet Raiders three runs in the eighth, 10-1.
  • WP opened the bottom of the eighth with walks issued to freshman designated hitter Ty Kobylakiewicz, junior second baseman Ruven Pino and junior catcher Austin Jack. Junior first baseman Gio Aresta dropped an RBI-single into right center, and after a lineout and foul-out, Hay was issued a base on balls to force across another runner, making it a 10-3 game.
  • The Pioneers tacked on one in the ninth with a Kobylakiewicz base hit up the middle, Pino and Aresta walks and Noah Cabassa single to left.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Hay was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Jack went 2-for-4.
  • Sophomore Jose Marte allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and three walks, striking out eight during 6.2 innings (1-3).
  • Freshman Kevin Reiner worked the final 2.1 innings and gave up three runs, four hits and two walks.
