BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins baseball team locked up the regular-season sweep of Ursinus in walk off fashion Sunday afternoon, with Dillon Souvignier's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth scoring Caleb Cyr to complete the comeback and steal a 5-4 win in front of the home crowd.
After not leading for a single inning in the first meeting between the sides, the Bears (9-13, 2-3 Centennial) wasted no time taking the lead in Sunday's rematch on a pitch that got past Caleb Cyr in the opening inning. Ursinus — who was the lone team to beat the Blue Jays in Centennial Conference play last season — added runs in the middle three innings to build its lead to four while Hopkins' (17-6, 5-0 Centennial) bats were held in check for the second straight contest.
Limited to just two hits to that point, the Blue Jays finally broke through for a three-run sixth inning to end the shutout and cut into the lead. Cyr started the inning with a walk — one of three free 90s the senior would take on the day — before advancing to second on a wild pitch. With a runner now in scoring position, Jacob Harris roped a ball down the right field line to score the senior, with a two-run shot from Jimmy Stevens on the ensuing at-bat making it just a one-run game.
Entering with two on and one out in the seventh, Cole Eggleston walked the first batter he faced to load the bases before retiring the next two to get out of the jam. The graduate student transfer stayed hot in the eighth, allowing the leadoff runner to get on — advancing to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt — before striking out the final two batters to keep his side within striking distance.
Following Eggleston's strong display on the mound, Harris and Stevens answered the call once again at the plate, with the junior drawing a leadoff walk before Stevens' single to short put two on with one out. A sac bunt from Tripp Myers moved the runners, allowing Dylan Whitney's sacrifice fly to tie the game at four heading into the ninth.
William Boneno tossed a shutout top of the ninth in his team-high ninth appearance of the year to give the Blue Jays a chance to walk it off in the bottom half of the inning, with two at-bats serving as all Hopkins needed to secure the come-from-behind win.
Cyr took a pitch off his back to reach base safely for the third straight at bat, once again advancing to second on a wild pitch. Up next to the plate was Souvignier, who battled at the plate before ripping a ball down the right field line to score the senior, earn the 5-4 win and complete the season sweep.
The Jays are back Tuesday, April 9 to take on Swarthmore in just their third true road game of the season. First pitch of the Centennial Conference bout is set for 3:30 p.m.
