Blue Jays Use Long Ball to Clinch 12-8 Win Over Sixth-Ranked Rowan

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins baseball team hosted sixth-ranked Rowan in a back-and-forth affair between two of the top 15 teams in the country Tuesday afternoon, blasting a season-best five homers and scoring four runs in a decisive eighth inning to secure a hard-fought 12-8 win over the Profs.

Rowan (12-3) brought in the first run of the afternoon on an RBI double to jump ahead 1-0 in the top of the second before the home run fest began for the Blue Jays (12-6) in the bottom of the frame. Caleb Cyr kicked off the inning with a walk — one of three the senior would draw on the day — before Dillon Souvignier hit a ball deep to center field that flew over the fence to give Hopkins the lead. After consecutive outs, Tripp Myers snuck in one more run before the inning could end, launching a no-doubter to right center to put the Jays up 3-1.

The Profs wasted no time retaking the lead scoring four runs in the third, but a Shane solo shot cut the lead back to one at 5-4 after three before a two-RBI single from Dylan Whitney that scored Jimmy Stevens and Shawn Steuerer made it 6-5 Jays.

Shane's second homer of the day kept Hopkins up one after Rowan leveled the score at six, with an RBI double from Myers putting the Blue Jays in front two after seven. Battling back once again, however, were the Profs, who were finally able to convert on relief pitcher Cole Jefferson after four shutout innings to tie the game at eight heading into the bottom of the eighth.

Only wanting to play another half inning, Isaiah Winikur picked the perfect time to register his first hit of the day in the back-half of the inning, bouncing an infield single to third and beating to throw to get the leadoff man on. After matchup-specific pitching changes were made to retire both Shane and Matthew Cooper, Cyr stepped up to the plate and ripped his first base knock of the day, a double to right center field that would score Winikur to give Hopkins the 9-8 lead.

An error by the third baseman on the ensuing at-bat brought Cyr home to make it 10-8 before Steuerer joined the home run party, ripping one to left center to bring in two more valuable runs and send the Blue Jays into the ninth up four.

William Boneno — who entered in relief in the eighth — allowed a leadoff single in the top of the ninth before retiring Rowan's next three batters to secure the impressive 12-8 victory in front of the home crowd.

Inside the Box Score – Johns Hopkins
• Boneno took home the win after throwing 1.1 scoreless innings while the Blue Jays took their eighth-inning lead. The sophomore's four wins are the most on the team this season, with his .93 WHIP also leading Hopkins' eligible pitchers.

• This was the second multi-home run game of Shane's career and his first of the 2024 season. The sophomore extended his hit streak to seven in the win including five multi-hit efforts, and has gone 2-5 in each of his last three games.

• Cyr's three walks drawn also tie his career-high set twice a season ago, with his game-winning RBI double in the eighth extending the senior's hit streak to seven. Improving on an already-impressive campaign from a season ago, Cyr leads the team in batting average (.356), doubles (7) home runs (4) and RBIs (20).

• Myers continues to enjoy one of the best stretches at the plate of his career, going 2-3 with two RBIs and another home run. The senior has now gone yard in four of his last five games, scoring seven runs and bringing in nine RBIs in that span.

• Souvignier and Steuerer both hit their second homers of the season in the win, joining Shane, Myers and Whitney as the five Blue Jays to bring home multiple RBIs in the win.
