Blue Jays Shut Down Ursinus, Top Bears 10-1

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins baseball team took on Ursinus in Centennial Conference action Saturday night, capitalizing on timely hits and another strong outing on the mound from Kieren Collins to secure a 10-1 win under the lights of Babb Field.

After a scoreless opening inning, it was the Blue Jays (16-6, 4-0 Centennial) showing patience at the plate in a three-run second inning to take control.  Dillon Souvignier and Shawn Steuerer drew a pair of walks to start the frame before another free 90 for Matthew Cooper loaded the bases with just one out. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Seif Ingram broke the tie, with a hard-hit single to the second baseman bringing in two more runs to put Hopkins in front 3-0.

Two more quiet innings ensued before a five-run fifth inning — on just three hits — blew the game open. Dylan Whitney was the first to get on after taking a pitch off the arm, with walks by Isaiah Winikur and Alex Shane loading the bases once again.

Taking advantage of the opportunity this time was Caleb Cyr, who ripped a double down the left field line to clear the bases and make it a 6-0 game despite having just two hits to that point. A Steuerer double brought Cyr home before Jimmy Stevens hit a single through the right side to score the junior and build Hopkins' lead to eight through five.

The Bears (9-13, 2-2 Centennial) broke the shutout in the sixth on an RBI single by Barritt Ross, but a pair of insurance runs off a Souvignier homer and a second Ingram sac fly put the game out of reach, with Ethan Fifer and Drew Grumbles each tossing a scoreless inning in relief to secure the win.

The Blue Jays are back in action Sunday, April 7 for a rematch against Ursinus, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
