Shane, Johns Hopkins Walk-Off Augustana For 7-6 Trip-Ending Win

AUBURNDALE, FL – The 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team capped its 10-day, nine-game spring break trip to Florida with a 7-6 walk-off win over Augustana Saturday morning.  Alex Shane's run-scoring double in the bottom of the ninth was the difference in the one-run victory, which improves the Blue Jays' record to 11-6 overall and 6-3 in Florida.  Augustana, which had won seven straight, slips to 12-4.

The Blue Jays trailed by three, led by three and were eventually deadlocked at 6-6 after five innings.  After combining for 12 runs in five innings, the teams managed just a combined four hits in innings six, seven and eight to send the game into the ninth still even.

Augustana got a runner to second with one out in the top of the ninth, but Will Boneno induced a fly ball to right that the Blue Jays turned into a double play to end the frame.  In the bottom of the inning, Tripp Myers was hit by a pitch with one out and raced home with the game-winning run on Shane's double to center to give the Blue Jays the win.

The Vikings had grabbed a 3-0 lead on the strength of a sacrifice fly and a two-run Grant Biggins single off Blue Jay reliever Ryan Anderson in the top of the third.

The three-run lead lasted until the bottom of the fourth, when the Blue Jays erupted for six runs on five hits to quickly turn the three-run deficit into a three-run lead.  It took just three batters for Hopkins to pull even as a Caleb Cyr walk and a Dillon Souvignier single were followed by Shawn Steuerer's second home run of the season.

Back-to-back Seif Ingram and Damian Brown singles chased Viking starter Chance Carruthers, but a Dylan Whitney sacrifice fly plated Ingram and Myers followed with a two-run home run to make it 6-3.

The Vikings pulled even in the top of the fifth with a three-spot that made it 6-6.  After sandwiching a pair of walks around a single, Augustana got a three-run double to left center from Dymitri Kanellakis.  Will Boneno then relieved Anderson and, after giving up an infield single, was able to pick up back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

Boneno stranded a runner in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings and the Blue Jays worked Cyr to second base in the fifth, but neither team scored until Shane delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth.

Boneno picked up the win for the Blue Jays as he worked 4.2 innings and allowed four hits while striking out six to improve to 3-1 on the year.  Shane, Souvignier and Steuerer all collected two hits for the Blue Jays to lead an 11-hit attack.

Kanellakis collected one-third of the Vikings' nine hits as he was 3-for-5 and knocked in five of Augustana's six runs in the loss.  Anthony Sus worked the final 5.1 innings and allowed just four hits and two runs while striking out six, but took the loss after Shane touched him for the run-scoring double in the ninth.

The Blue Jays will return to Babb Field on Tuesday, March 26 when they welcome Rowan for a non-conference game (3:30 pm).  The Profs are currently 12-2 and ranked seventh in the nation.
