NEW LONDON, Conn. – Seniors Cole Lalli (Coventry, Conn.) and Jack Hayes (New Milford, Conn.) had three hits apiece for the Mitchell College baseball team on Tuesday afternoon, helping power the Mariners past Rivier University 13-1 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game at Alumni Field.
The win was the eight consecutive for the Mariners, and improved their GNAC record to a perfect 12-0.
Lalli added three RBI, while Hayes drove in one and scored two times. Freshman Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.) finished 2-4 with three RBI and a run scored, while senior Michael Gajda belted his third home run of the season, a three-run shot to deep left-centerfield in the fifth inning. Seniors Angel Galindez (Carolina, PR) and Robbie DelaCruz (Uncasville, Conn.) each added two hits and drove in three runs.
Once again playing on their home diamond as the away team, the Mariners plated five runs in the top of the first and never looked back, scoring again in the second, before adding four runs in the fifth, and another three in the sixth.
Freshman Joshua Scamman (Danbury, Conn.) improved his record to 2-0 on the spring, tossing five and one third innings of one run ball. Scamman scattered just one hit, allowed one walk, and struck out six.
Mitchell tagged Rivier starter Sean Kuhloff for 13 runs (11 earned) in five innings. Sebastien Reis collected the lone hit for the Raiders, who scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth when Reis drew a walk with the bases loaded.
The Mariners (25-8, 12-0 GNAC) will look to remain undefeated in GNAC play when they travel to Colby-Sawyer College on Thursday, April 25th, with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 pm. The Raiders (7-21, 3-9 GNAC) will also face Colby-Sawyer for their next game, a conference road doubleheader on Saturday, April 27th.
