Plattsburgh State Athletics News: Baseball Overcomes Early Four-Run Deficit to Take Series Opener Against Brockport

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team overcame an early 4-0 deficit on Friday evening, taking down Brockport 10-7 in their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) series opener with the Golden Eagles. Mike Rasquin (Garden City, N.Y/Garden City) led the offensive charge with four hits and three RBI, as the team picked up their ninth conference win, their highest SUNYAC win total since 2012.

Rasquin also scored a run on the evening, as Conner Gonzalski (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) was 2-3 with two doubles, two RBI, a run scored, and a walk. Dylan Bass (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) had a huge outing out of the bullpen for Plattsburgh, tossing three scoreless innings for his first save as a Cardinal. Kolby Mordecki (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) earned his fourth win of the year, giving up four earned runs and striking out one.

Plattsburgh State improves 21-12 (9-7 SUNYAC) and Brockport falls to 17-14 (5-8 SUNYAC) as the teams will meet tomorrow, April 27, for a doubleheader beginning at noon. The Cardinals will honor six seniors tomorrow for their 2024 Senior Day between games: Eric Agan (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), Ben Catrambone (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna), Nick Cergol (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai), Jack Defayette (Rotterdam, N.Y./Schalmont), Tyler Kohn (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North), and Chris Santic (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland).

Brockport struck in the SUNYAC series opener, scoring one in the first and three in the second, taking a 4-0 lead, which held through three and a half innings. The team did so behind three unearned runs in the second, with two errors helping three runs across.

After going scoreless in their first three innings at the plate, Plattsburgh State's offense awoke in the fourth, pushing across five runs on six hits. After a leadoff HBP from Alex Kornblau (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane), Kyle Cremin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) doubled down the right field line to set up the inning. Gonzalski followed with a two-run double and after an HBP, Defayette singled home Gonzalski, putting the Cards down just a run. Andrew Veit (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) singled to right center in the next at-bat, scoring Cergol and tying the game at four runs. Adam Wein (North Rockland, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) followed with an infield hit to score Defayette, putting the Cards ahead 5-4.

In the sixth, Plattsburgh tacked on three more runs, as Rasquin singled home Defayette to start the scoring. Cremin also brought in a run with a single to center and Kornblau scored on a wild pitch in the next at-bat, putting Plattsburgh ahead 8-4.

After three runs from Brockport in the seventh to knock Mordecki from the game, Bass put out the fire to keep the Cards ahead a run. Plattsburgh then picked up two huge insurance runs, courtesy of a Rasquin two-run single, putting them up 10-7.

Bass worked around a one-out walk and infield hit to get out of trouble against the middle of the order in the eighth, and then got help from his outfield in the ninth, as Defayette gunned down a runner trying to stretch a single into a double and then induced a flyout to end the game.

Matt McGowan took the loss, going just 3.1 innings and giving up five earned runs. Frank Vanzilotta was 4-5 with an RBI and two runs scored while Zach Eldred and David Belsito each had two RBI and a double.
