William Paterson Can’t Hold Early Lead, Suffers First Loss of Season

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (4-1) opened up an early lead but couldn't hold off Drew (2-2) as the Pioneers suffered their first loss of the season, 10-9, March 1 at Jeff Albies Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • WP opened up an 8-0 first-inning lead. Senior center fielder Braden Ramirez singled and advanced to third on a failed pickoff with one out, then trotted home when sophomore first baseman Ty Kobylakiewicz sent a base hit into center field. Senior second baseman Tom Radigan walked, sophomore left fielder Stephen Kubis hit a two-run double to left center, and junior designated hitter Dylan Santos and junior third baseman Jordan Brown were issued walks to load the bases. Junior right fielder Thomas Jova's double cleared the bags, making it a 6-0 score, and two batters later junior shortstop Angel Colon singled in Jova and Ramirez doubled in Colon, handing WP an eight-run lead.
  • The Rangers plated two unearned runs in the fourth, then made it an 8-3 game in the fifth with a double and single.
  • Drew seized a 9-8 lead with a six-run sixth inning, stringing together five hits, one walk, a sacrifice bunt, a hit by pitch and a sac fly.
  • Two base hits and a hit by pitch netted one Drew run during the top of the eighth inning, extending the lead to 10-8.
  • Back-to-back doubles by Ramirez and Kobylakiewicz to start the home half of the ninth pulled the Pioneers within one, 10-9. A Radigan walk gave WP runners on first and second with one out, but two flyouts ended William Paterson's comeback hopes.
