FORT PIERCE, Fla. (March 7) – The Waynesburg University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Elizabethtown on the penultimate day of the Yellow Jackets' spring break trip in Florida.
Waynesburg falls to 3-6 on the season. Elizabethtown, which knocked off defending NCAA Division III national champion Misericordia earlier this week, runs its winning streak to five games and moves to 7-2.
The Blue Jays scored in six of seven innings en route to a 12-5 victory in game one. Elizabethtown used a seven-run fourth inning to secure a 12-6 win in game two. Waynesburg notched 23 hits over the two seven-inning games and the Blue Jays recorded 29.
Game 1 – Elizabethtown 12, Waynesburg 5
The Blue Jays scored in every inning except the fifth in the opening game of the doubleheader. After leading 2-1 after two innings, Etown added there in the third, four in the fourth and two in the sixth to separate from the Jackets.
Waynesburg notched 11 hits of its own and scored in four of seven innings, but only scored multiple runs in the third inning.
Seth Burgdolt (Taylorstown, Pa. / McGuffey) went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a solo home run in the seventh. He scored four of Waynesburg's five runs and drove in one. Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler) and Trent Giraffa (Hanover, Pa. / Delone Catholic) each had two hits.
Etown's high-powered lineup notched 14 hits, five of which went for extra bases. Both teams put a runner on base in every inning.
Waynesburg starter Dalton Lucey (Waynesburg, Pa. / West Greene) was tagged with the loss after giving up nine runs, seven earned, in 3.1 innings.
Game 2 – Elizabethtown 12, Waynesburg 6
The Jackets led 3-0, 4-2 and 6-4 after the top of the first, second and fourth innings in game two. The Blue Jays had six hits, a double and two triples, to plate seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 11-6 lead.
The Jackets put two runners on in the sixth and seventh innings but came up scoreless in both frames. A double play ended the sixth and after the Jackets put two on with nobody out in the seventh, the Jackets ended the game with a force out, foul out and fly out.
Burgdolt turned in a 3-for-4 effort at the plate in game two with a run scored and an RBI. Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) had two hits, doubled, drove in two and scored once. Mike Bell (Herminie, Pa. / Yough) reached base safely three times and scored twice.
Waynesburg used four different pitchers, each of whom gave up at least one earned run. Ryan Opfer (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) was charged with one earned run over the final 2.2 innings.
Waynesburg concludes its spring trip against Gettysburg tomorrow at 10 a.m.
