DAVENPORT, FL - Chris Serrano, Mason Dorsey and Marco Mannino were among the top hitters as #17 Rowan (10-1) won a pair of games on Monday at the Russ Matt Invitational. The Profs defeated Amherst, 13-7, and Hope, 11-2, as they ran their winning streak to nine, while scoring double digit runs in all six games of the Florida trip.
GAME 1 - Rowan 13 - Amherst 7
Serrano drove in four runs while going 2-for-5, with Dorsey notching three RBI, scoring three runs and picking up two hits. Mannino went 3-for-5 in the game and scored three times.
In his first start of the year, Thomas Sullivan went 6.0 innings and struck out eight to earn the decision. Christian Rice tossed one inning in relief and Nick Cugino finished it out with two innings of work.
Rowan struck first when Sedalis hit his third triple of the year and scored on a ground out by Jason Morgan. Amherst put three runs on the board in the bottom of that inning to take a 3-1 lead.
The Profs regained the lead, 4-3, with three in the third as Serrano drove in one on a sacrifice bunt and Brayden Davis hit a two-run single. Rowan started to open it up on the fourth, scoring four runs on four hits. Dorsey hit a two-run double to score Joey Bogart and Karson Harcourt while Serrano connected on a two-run single that allowed Mannino and Dorsey to score, increasing Rowan's lead to 8-3. The Profs added a run in the fifth when Nick Struble led off with a base hit and eventually scored on a single by Dorsey.
Amherst wouldn't quit, adding one in the sixth to trail, 9-4, but Bogart tripled to lead off the seventh and with Harcourt on board, Mannino doubled down the left field line to bring them both home and up the lead to 11-4. The senior shortstop then scored the final run of the inning as he crossed the plate on a passed ball.
Amherst scored three times in the seventh, to pull within 12-7, but Serrano brought home the final run of the game, singling in Dorsey in the ninth to provide the final margin.
GAME 2 - Rowan 11 - Hope 2
Mannino went 3-for-4 with three RBI, and Davis, Bogart and Dorsey drove in two runs apiece as the Profs jumped out to a 6-0 lead on the Flying Dutchmen.
Tyler Parks picked up the victory in his first decision as a Prof, throwing five shutout innings and striking out four. Charlie Russell had 2.2 strong innings in relief as he struck out two and didn't allow a run.
Mannino had a two-run single in the sixth, Bogart laid down a successful squeeze bunt and Dorsey knocked in a run with a single as Rowan scored four in the sixth inning.
Hope got on the board with their only runs of the game in the bottom of that inning, pulling within 6-2.
The Profs answered with two in the seventh and then three in the eighth, helped by back-to-back RBI doubles by Morgan and Davis, and a run-scoring single rom Mannino.
Rowan will take a day off on Tuesday and return to action on Wednesday at 9 a.m. against Southern Maine at Lake Myrtle Field in Auburndale.
