GLASSBORO, NJ - Mike Shannon allowed just one run and Dave Appolonia had a career-high five RBI as #16 Rowan rolled over Montclair State, 21-3, in the first game of an NJAC doubleheader. The Red Hawks then rebounded to win the nightcap, 13-6, to earn a split.
GAME 1 - Rowan 21 - Montclair State 3
Rowan exploded for 12 runs in the fourth inning to put the game away early after owning a 1-0 lead after the third. The Profs scored eight more in the final two innings to record their highest run total of the year.
Appolonia scored two runs and drove in five in the game, with Tyler Cannon going 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBI. Karson Harcourt was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a career-high four runs, while all of his hits were doubles. Shannon allowed just one run and seven hits in 8.0 innings and struck out eight to improve to 5-1 on the year.
Cannon started it off with an RBI single in the third to score Appolonia, who had reached on an error.
In the fourth inning, Appolonia broke it open with a three-run single to give Rowan a 5-0 lead. Jason Morgan and Marco Mannino had RBI singles and then Montclair State aided the Profs with four walks/hit batters to drive in more runs, giving Rowan an 11-0 lead. Cannon finished it off with a two-run single that scored Chris Serrano and Harcourt to give Rowan a commanding 13-0 lead. After the two games, Rowan is now 16-7 and 2-3 in the NJAC.
Montclair got on the board with a run in the fifth but then the Profs scored five in the seventh. Among the big hits were an RBI double by Serrano, an RBI single from Cannon and a two-run home run from Sedalis, his seventh of the year. The Profs tacked on three more in the eighth when pinch hitter Damon Suriani clubbed the first homer of his career, a two-run shot, and Mason Dorsey drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
GAME 2 - Montclair State 13- Rowan 6
The Red Hawks rebounded quickly and scored two runs in the first. Rowan tied it in the third on a fielder's choice from Cannon and a squeeze bunt by Mannino.
Montclair State then answered with six runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take an 8-2 lead. But Rowan was still in the game and after a two-run double from Brayden Davis and Sedalis' second homer of the day, a two-run shot, the Profs had closed to 8-6.
The Red Hawks would score five runs in the final two innings to put the game away.
Steven Maiers (2-1) suffered the loss for Rowan with Christian Rice, Mark Grubb, Tyler Parks and Charlie Russell each seeing action out of the bullpen. Offensively, Davis had three hits and two RBI, and Sedalis drove in two runs.
The Profs return to action in a rescheduled game at Stockton on Monday and will then visit Rutgers-Camden on Thursday before hosting the Scarlet Raptors on Friday.
