No. 21 Spartans Wrap-Up UAA Play with 15-3 Win over Brandeis

One day removed from clinching the University Athletic Association Championship, the 21st-ranked Case Western Reserve University baseball team concluded conference play with a 15-3 win in seven innings over Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans wrapped up UAA play with a 14-5-1 overall record, marking the most league wins in a season by a team in conference history. CWRU improved to 25-12-1 overall with the win, its third in a row. Brandeis dropped to 11-27 overall and finished its UAA slate with a 3-17 mark.

Graduate student designated hitter Dane Camphausen hit a pair of home runs to break his own program single-season record (set last season) with 15 home runs this year. He finished the game three-for-five with three runs and five runs batted in. Sophomore first baseman Tyler Stillson also homered twice in the game and went three-for-five with six RBIs, a double, and three runs scored. Junior center fielder Matt Trout homered for the second-straight day and went three-for-four with two runs, two RBIs, and a walk.

Meanwhile, first-year left-handed pitcher Charlie Griffith turned in a solid performance on the mound, holding the Judges to three runs on five hits and four walks and matching his career-high with eight strikeouts. He improved to 4-1 with a 5.40 ERA following the effort.

The Spartans took control of the series finale early with four runs in each of the first two innings, including three on Camphausen's record-setting home run in the second, going ahead 8-0. After Brandeis got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, back-to-back home runs in the top of the fifth from Stillson (a two-run shot for his seventh of the season) and Trout (a solo blast for his second of the year) extended CWRU's lead to 11-1.

Stillson added another two-run home run, his third long ball of the weekend and eighth of the campaign, with one out in the sixth to push the Spartans' advantage to 13-1. Graduate student catcher Jack Anderson added an RBI single later in the frame, giving CWRU a 13-run lead after five and a half frames. Camphausen connected for his second home run of the game to lead off the seventh and push the team's lead to 15-1.

Griffith began the seventh on the mound but allowed the first two runners of the inning to reach before giving way to first-year righty Oliver Miller, who allowed both inherited runners to score before getting the final three outs to close out the win.

CWRU totaled 18 hits in the game, the fourth-straight game that the Spartans have had 10 or more hits and the eighth time in their last nine games.

Brandeis starter Ryan Antrim suffered the loss, dropping to 1-2 for the season.

With their conference schedule now complete, the Spartans will turn their attention to the two remaining non-conference games on their 2025 regular season schedule, including a home matchup against Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday, April 29 at 4:00 p.m.

Spartan Notes

  • Stillson's second home run of the day was the Spartans' 41st of the season as a team, setting a new program record for home runs in a campaign. It was his second multiple-home run game of the season after previously hitting a pair in a win over Johnson and Wales on March 15. His six RBIs in the game matched a career-high, and he finished the weekend with 12 hits in 21 at-bats with seven runs, two doubles, three home runs, and eight RBIs.

  • Anderson has now reached base safely in all 38 of the team's games this season and in 51 consecutive games dating back to last season. He went nine-for-12 with nine runs, a double, six RBIs, nine walks, and six stolen bases on as many attempts during the series against Brandeis.

  • Camphausen, who hit four home runs during the weekend, now has 59 for his career (including his four years as an undergraduate at Wooster), tied for the most among active Division III players and fourth players across all three NCAA divisions. He drove in 14 runs against the Judges this weekend, marking the second-straight UAA series he has recorded double-digit RBIs.

  • The Spartans now stand at 37-27 all-time against Brandeis and have won 15 of the last 17 meetings. CWRU is 24–4 against the Judges since the start of site play in 2017.

  • CWRU stole two more bases on as many tries on Sunday and has now been successful on its last 34 stolen base attempts over the last eight contests. The Spartans' 93 stolen bases this season are tied for the second most in program history and three away from the program record of 96 set during the 2016 campaign.

  • The Spartans have now won 11 consecutive UAA series with Sunday's win, dating back to the 2023 season.

This was the fourth time in UAA play this season and the fifth time overall that CWRU has won a game via the 10-run rule.
