RMC Baseball Outlasts Methodist in 10

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Junior Jordan Hill (Norfolk, Va./Granby) drew a bases-loaded with two away in the top of the 10th and sophomore Jack Bowles (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) followed with a two-run single as the Randolph-Macon baseball team posted a 3-0 victory at Methodist on Tuesday evening to conclude the regular season.

How It Happened:

  • The Monarchs put two on with one away in the second, but sophomore Peter Phillips (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) got a strikeout and groundout to end the threat.
  • MU put another pair on with one away in the third, but Phillips got a flyout and groundout to keep the game scoreless.
  • Sophomore Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) drew a leadoff walk in the fifth and sophomore James Baffone (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) followed with a one-out walk, but a double play ended the frame.
  • The Monarchs put two on with one away in the sixth. Senior Sam Slevin (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank Cox) recorded a pair of swinging strikeouts as MU stranded three.
  • MU had a leadoff double in the eighth, but Slevin fanned two swinging and got a flyout to strand the runner at second.
  • The Yellow Jackets would rally with two away in the 10th. Sophomore Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) singled to right center and went to second on a base hit to left by Baffone.  Senior Cole Mallory (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) pinch-hit and drew a walk to load the bases. Hill also walked to force in Quici with the game's first run. Bowles followed with a single to center to knock in Baffone and Mallory, giving RMC a 3-0 advantage.
  • Senior Michael Shanahan (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax), the reigning ODAC Pitcher of the Week, kept the Monarchs off the scoreboard in the bottom of the 10th to record his fourth save of the season.

Second-seeded Randolph-Macon will host seventh-seeded Hampden-Sydney in a best-of-three quarterfinal series as part of the 2025 ODAC Championship. Game 1 will be on Saturday, May 3, at 2 p.m. Game 2 will be on Sunday, May 4, at noon. If a third game is needed, it will follow Game 2. All games will be played on Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
