Teams pitch shutouts on Friday

After a long bus ride down to South Carolina, Centenary opened the 2013 season with a bang, shutting out SUNY-Maritime 7-0 in their first game of the 2013 Ripken Division III Northeast Challenge. Dylan Kemmerer was able to shut down the Maritime offense as he only allowed two hits over four innings of work. Jimmy Kraivec picked up the season opening win for the Cyclones after five innings of work in his collegiate debut. Centenary fell to Rutgers-Newark 7-1 in their second game of the Northeast Challenge.

Mary Washington received two outstanding efforts on the mound and the bats came alive in game two as the Eagles swept a doubleheader from Eastern Mennonite, 1-0 and 12-0, at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 3-1, and run their scoreless streak on the mound to 21 innings. Torey Mancari turned in another terrific start, allowing just two hits in five innings, with two walks and seven strikeouts. Junior Chris Somerville allowed one hit in 1.1 innings, and junior Jake Black provided two-thirds of an inning of perfect relief in gaining the win. In game two, Mike Straub allowed just one hit in five innings, and Ben Sisk and Bernard Mayflower each provided a perfect inning of relief.

Roanoke and Frostburg State traded shutouts at Roanoke. Frostburg shut out the Maroons in their home opener 3-0 in game one. Junior starting pitcher Austin Portez threw all 7.0 innings and struckout four, while scattering just three hits for the victory. Roanoke was a 1-0 winner of game two. Tyler Grouten pitched the first five innings of the contest, giving up three hits, and striking out seven batters. Mark Wimmer picked up the win with two innings pitched giving up no hits and striking out one.

Lynchburg batted around in the second inning, plating five runs, on its way to a 7-2 victory over #6 Birmingham Southern in the first game of the Piedmont College Tournament. Brandon Miller pitched a complete game for the Hornets, his second in as many attempts. The sophomore scattered two runs on seven hits while striking out seven and not surrendering a walk.

Four players collected multiple hits and three recorded multiple-RBI games as No. 9 Salisbury defeated Presque Isle (Maine), 10-4, at the SU Baseball Field. Salisbury, which banged out 12 hits, was led by junior Bill Root, who was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, three walks, two doubles and two RBIs.

Jared Chase hammered out a single, double, home run, and drove in four runs, leading  undefeated George Fox back from a five-run deficit to an 11-8 victory over the Cal Lutheran in a non-conference game at George “Sparky” Anderson Field.

The Ozarks Eagles battered six pitchers and pounded out 17 hits in a convincing 12-4 win over Texas Lutheran in the Concordia (Texas) Tournament. For the second straight game, Ozarks had a big seventh inning to break open a close game. With the score tied 3-3, the Eagles exploded for nine runs on seven hits. Three straight hits to open the seventh ignited the Eagles, an inning that was highlighted by Nick Brill, who had an RBI double and a two-run single in the frame.  In other tournament action, Brandon Garwood earned his first collegiate victory by pitching more five shutout innings on the mound to lead the Concordia (Texas) Tornados to a 4-1 win over Sul Ross State at Tornado Field.

Puget Sound suffered its first loss of the season in a 13-4 decision to Corban. The Loggers pounded out 10 hits but the first four batters to come to the plate scored for Corbin and they never looked back. The Warriors ended up sending eight batters to the plate in the opening frame.

Casey Gray pitched a complete game and allowed no earned runs as Berry won at Mississippi College, 2-1. Gray allowed four hits, struck out four and walked two.
