CAC tournament highlights Wednesday action

Senior Nick Santalucia struck out a career-high 11 batters as he outdueled Frostburg State starter Kenny Georgius for a 2-1 win in the CAC Tournament opening round on Wednesday. The Captains will face second-seeded Salisbury on Friday, April 18 at the home field of the CAC regular season champion York (Pa.).  Salisbury was a 5-4 winner over Wesley and York defeated St. Mary's (Md) 7-6.

Starting pitcher Walt Hadjuk allowed just three hits in six scoreless innings as the Redhawks extended their win-streak to seven games with a 15-0 victory over Denison. La Roche has scored 134 runs in the past seven games (19.1 per game).

Bridgewater College tuned up for an important week of conference games with a 24-0 victory over Catholic in a non-conference contest. Senior right-hander Nick Corbin gave the Eagles a strong effort on the mound, working seven shutout innings to pick up the victory. He allowed just three hits while walking three batters and striking out six.

Emory freshman Hans Hansen threw seven scoreless innings at Chappell Park, and senior Robert Gross and freshman Kyle Monk completed the shutout out of the bullpen with an inning each, as the Eagles defeated Berry 5-0 in a key regional matchup as both teams were trying to improve their resume for selection to the NCAA Championships.

Salem State continued their undefeat conference run by defeating the Framingham State Rams, 5-0, and 5-1 in a twinbill at the Central Campus Baseball Field. Salem State continued the remains atop the MASCAC standings with a 8-0 record.

Tyler Hebda threw a scoreless fourth inning against Whittier Wednesday and picked up his fifth win of the season.

Playing for the fourth time in six days, Cal Lutheran got six shutout inning innings from its bullpen and three hits from Collin Crowl including the eventual game-winning RBI as the Kingsmen beat Whittier 5-1. The game between the SCIAC schools didn’t count for league play but rather for positioning in the West Region standings. Since falling in game two of last weekend’s series, Cal Lutheran has outscored Whittier 17-1 over the last 11 innings.

On March 25, Springfield and MIT battled through 14 innings, until darkness forced the game to be suspended with a 1-1 tie. The Springfield College baseball team picked up two big conference wins over MIT on Thursday. Two dominating pitching performances helped Marietta sweep an OAC doubleheader from Capital at Don Schaly Stadium. The Pioneers posted a pair of shutouts over the Crusaders, 5-0 in game one and 6-0 in the nitecap.

Seven pitchers combined on a four-hitter as Rochester defeated 25-ranked Ithaca, 6-0, at Towers Field. Rob Mabee was the winning pitcher. He worked the third inning for Rochester and was the pitcher of record when the Yellowjackets scored three unearned runs in the top of the fourth. Mabee was followed on the mound by Josh Schulman, Ethan McGowan, Grant Petitio, Andrew Crean, and Evan Janifer. Dan Warren started. He pitched two innings of 1-2-3 ball with two strikeouts.

Edgewood had 19 hits, all singles, and received two outstanding pitching performances in a sweep of Dominican at windy Stampfl Field. The Eagles moved into third place in the NACC with 5-3 and 6-2 victories.

Bobby Rosano and Everett Walsh combined for five hits and five RBI to back a complete-game effort on the mound from Kyle Kennedy that lifted Mass-Maritime to an 8-2 opening game victory over Bridgewater State and a split of a MASCAC doubleheader. The host Bears jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap and held on for a 5-3 second game triumph to gain a split of the twinbill.

No. 12 Shenandoah moved within one game of earning the top seed at the upcoming ODAC baseball tournament by splitting a doubleheader with Washington and Lee. The Hornets were 15-4 winners in the nightcap after W&L was a 6-3 victor in the opener. Shenandoah can clinch the top-seed with a win tomorrow in a contest against second-place Bridgewater.

Senior Justin Costa scored the game-winning run on a walk-off RBI single from pinch hitter Patrick Rogers in the bottom of the 10th inning, propelling the Rhode Island College past Mass-Dartmouth, 9-8, in Little East Conference action at Anchorman Field. Rhode Island College won their second straight Little East Conference contest and moves into a three-way tie for fourth place in the league standings.

Anthony Zaloga, Ian Carbone and Chris Soltys combined to allow just two hits, four walks and a run as Moravian improved to 24-6 on the season with an 8-1 non-conference victory at DeSales. The Greyhounds scored at least eight runs in a game for the 14th time this season.

Charlie LaPaglia drove in the deciding run in a two-run bottom of the eighth to give UMass-Boston a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Roger Williams. LaPaglia's game-clinching hit plated Jamill Moquete to help the Beacons end a two-game skid.  LaPaglia led UMB as he went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.
