LaGRANGE, Ga. - The Oglethorpe baseball team completed back-to-back wins in back-to-back days Wednesday night, defeating the home-standing LaGrange Panthers 4-2 in LaGrange, Ga.

The Stormy Petrels used a three-run sixth inning and solid pitching performances to secure the two-run victory. Reliever Sam Traxler picked up the win in relief, improving to 4-0 on the season. The four wins give him the team lead by himself. He threw three innings of shutout ball, allowing two hits, walking two and striking out two. Joe Marco picked up his first save of the season, throwing the final two innings and allowing just two hits and a single unearned run.

Center fielder Vernon Trice led off the game with an infield single, then stole second. First baseman Frank Sarno walked, as did designated hitter Patrick Kulick, loading the bases. Third baseman Austin Ferlita followed with a sacrifice fly, giving the Petrels a 1-0 lead. The Panthers came back with a single run in the first, tying the game at 1-1.

Pitching took over from there, as neither team scored for the next four innings. However, the Petrels took the game over in the sixth. Right fielder Joey McAlpin led off the inning with a single and was followed by second baseman Keith Dearden reaching on an error. Two batters later, catcher Kerrigan McManigal struck out, but reached on a wild pitch, loading the bases with one out. Shortstop Spencer Transue and Trice both drew run-scoring walks to give the Petrels a 3-1 lead and Sarno followed those two with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 4-1.

From there, the Petrels allowed an unearned run in the eighth but cruised to the two-run victory.

Ferlita went 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly, two walks and an RBI.

The Petrels improve to 17-19 on the season and will now get set to host Millsaps in the final series of the SAA season at Anderson Field. The two teams will play a doubleheader Friday starting at 4 p.m. and then a single game Saturday at 2 p.m.
