Mary Washington opened the 2016 season with a doubleheader sweep over Maine-Presque Isle on Friday. Scores were 8-2 and 15-0. The Eagles scored early in game one and often in game two as the starting pitching held the Owls off the base pathes.

Wesley opened their season with a Friday matinee, taking on Greensboro as part of the Floyd Wilcox Memorial Tournament at Hampden-Sydney. The Wolverines got a solid outing from starting pitcher Eric Willey, going 7.0 innings and allowing just three runs (two earned) on six hits and recording six strikeouts but it wasn't enough as the Wolverines fell 5-1 to the Pride.

A five-run first inning and dominant pitching performance on the mound by junior Jackson Weeg helped No. 3 Emory improve to 4-2 on the season with a 6-1 victory over the visiting Ferrum Panthers. The Eagles saw the first seven batters reach base as Emory jumped out to a 5-0 lead and Weeg did the rest, working seven superb innings of one run ball with a career-high 10 strikeouts.

Senior pitcher Matt Smith tossed a career-high 12 strikeouts to lead the Chapman Panthers to their first SCIAC win. The Panthers defeated Occidental 8-5 at Hart Park.

Stevens topped No. 5 Kean 3-2 in 10 innings in the season-opener for both teams. Jayson Yano, Greg Jakusik, Danny McIntyre, and Ryan Patterson combined to allow only three hits to the high-powered Cougar offense.

Featuring another strong performance by junior Ryan Gaines on the mound, No. 8 Birmingham-Southern defeated Greenville, 4-1, at Striplin Field. Gaines went seven innings, allowing three hits and no earned runs with 10 strikeouts, to move to 2-0. Ross James pitched the final two innings and picked up his first save of the year.

Daniel Morris is 2-1 with a 0.95 ERA through three games in the 2016 season.

The No. 11 Rhodes Lynx got eight strong innings of pitching from senior Daniel Morris and a pair of 3-hit games from juniors Ryan Olive and Bill Munson as a pair of 3-run innings lifted the Lynx to 7-3 win over the Covenant Scots. With the win, Rhodes ended a three game losing streak. Covenant fell to Huntingdon 12-6 in an earlier game.

Despite giving up five runs in the first inning, Christopher Newport rebounded to defeat Rutgers-Newark, 8-6. The Captains bullpen was tremendous, tossing 8.2 innings and allowing just one unearned run, while sophomore catcher Brandon Walker led the offense with 3 RBI and a pair of home runs.

Junior Steven Jurkiewicz tossed a complete game with just one run allowed to lead Castleton to its first win of the season this with a 2-1 result over Averett at Owen-Fulton Field. The southpaw allowed 13 hits, but gave up no walks and hit just one batter, as the Spartans snapped their three-game losing streak. Averett's T.J. Viracola was just as good in his first start of 2016 for the Cougars, tossing nine innings and allowing just two runs (one earned) and three hits with ten strikeouts.

Brandeis matched their scoring output from their first two games as the Judges completed a three-game sweep of St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) with an 8-2 victory in Chain O' Lakes Park in Winter Park, Fla., as part of the Russ Matt Classic. The Judges improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2008 with the win.

Oglethorpe used a masterful start from senior right-hander Spencer Transue, an excellent relief appearance from senior right-hander Joe Marco, and a bizarre inning where junior right fielder Brandon Fish reached on an error and then scored on three consecutive balks to defeat the visiting Curry Colonels 1-0 at Anderson Field despite scratching out just a single hit against Curry starter David Griffin. The victory improved the Stormy Petrels to 2-0 on the young season.

Virginia Wesleyan scored 10 runs on two homers, three doubles, and two triples, while also swiping five bags and picking up an outfield assist in a 10-5 victory over Millsaps in the season opener for the Marlins. Nik Milvo and Randy Neisz both connected for home runs on the afternoon while Deon Hammond proved to be a force on the bases, tying a school record in three stolen bases in the contest.
