Arcadia, Earlham start season with DH sweeps

Arcadia swept a non-conference doubleheader at Immaculata Saturday in its first two games of the 2016 season. The Knights took game-one 1-0 before taking game-two 10-5. Junior shortstop George Pagan drove in the only run in game one and added two more RBI in the blowout in the nightcap.

Earlham opened its 2016 season with a doubleheader sweep of Sewanee, winning game one 8-0 and coming from behind for a 6-5 win in game two at Sadler Stadium.

Rutgers-Newark did not learn from yesterday's game when Christopher Newport fell behind early and battled back for the win. On Saturday the Captains fell behind 10-0 after two and a half innings and rallied for 18 unanswered runs to pick up an 18-10 victory over Rutgers-Newark. Senior Tommy Vitaletti was a catalyst for the offensive outburst, going 5-6 with a career-high 8 RBI, 2 home runs and 3 runs scored.

Hendrix picked up their first wins of the season with a doubleheader sweep of Washington University at Warrior Field. The Warriors took the first game 2-1, then topped the Bears 6-4. In the opener, senior Daniel Imbro struck out 10 and allowed three hits, one run and two walks in nine-inning, complete game effort. Junior Harley Faye earned the win in game two. He had a strikeout and allowed eight hits, four earned runs and two walks over seven innings.

The offense was in high gear on Saturday, as the Eastern Mennonite Royals scored 29 runs in just 12 offensive innings, taking a doubleheader sweep of visiting Juniata. EMU scored 15 in their final inning in game one and led off with four in the second game, putting one game away and giving the Royals a cushionin game two.

Wesley turned 20 hits into 17 runs as they thumped Greensboro on Saturday afternoon to earn a 17-6 victory in eight innings as part of the Floyd Wilcox Memorial Tournament. Dre Jones and Trevor Mears each had four hits, four runs, and three RBI, while Christopher Seibert went 3-for-5 with a team-high four runs knocked in. Mike Calvarese added a 2-for-4 effort with a pair of RBI as well. Cody Simet earned the win on the mound, tossing six innings and allowing two earned runs (six total) on 10 hits while recording a pair of strikeouts. Alex Marrs and Collin Miller each tossed a scoreless inning of relief to close out the game.

Oglethorpe improved to 4-0 on the young season with a doubleheader sweep of the Curry Colonels at Anderson Field. The Stormy Petrels defeated Curry 4-1 in the first game and 7-2 in the 7-inning second game, completing a 3-game sweep of the Colonels.

Berry held off Fontbonne, 5-4, at William R. Bowdoin Field for a three-game sweep of the Griffins to move to 10-0. Trey Rampy improved to 2-0 after throwing seven innings and getting the win. He allowed two hits, struck out four batters and had no walks. JP Chamblee tossed the final two outs and earned his first save of the season.

Virginia Wesleyan scored three runs in the first and never surrendered the lead en route to a 6-4 victory over Piedmont in the second day of the Piedmont Early Spring Classic. The Marlins stole six bases in the game, led by two each from Deon Hammond and Nik Milvo. Hammond now has five steals in just two games. Taylor Erby and Milvo each had three hits for Virginia Wesleyan.

The George Fox Bruins bashed 29 hits and scored 20 times in cruising to a doubleheader sweep of Pacific in the Northwest Conference openers for both teams at the Curtis and Margaret Morse Athletic Complex. With the 11-3 and 9-2 victories, George Fox improved to 6-4 on the season and opened at 2-0 in conference play. Pacific falls to 4-6 overall and to 0-2 in the NWC.

Kenner Berry had five extra-base hits, including three home runs, to power the Bridgewater (Va.) Eagles to a doubleheader sweep over Mount Saint Vincent. In the opener Berry hit two homers, one an inside-the-park job, to pace the Eagles to an 11-2 victory. Sophomore lefty Chad Lenz worked four solid innings, allowing just one earned run, to pick up the victory on the mound. In the second game, Berry needed only a single to hit for the cycle as he finished 3-for-5 with a double, triple and homer. Starting pitcher Brady Cockerham and three relievers combined to blank the Dolphins on just four base hits.

Westminster (Mo.) saw two career records fall in Saturday's season-opener doubleheader at the University of the Ozarks. The Blue Jays split the games, winning the first 7-3 and dropping the second 11-9. Senior Deion Hughes broke the career wins record in game one, and senior Tyler Branneky broke the career hitting record in game two. Hughes now holds 18 career wins at Westminster, and Branneky now has 142 career hits.

Southern Vermont picked up its first win of the 2016 season as the visiting Mountaineers split a doubleheader at Southern Virginia, falling 3-2 in the opener before bouncing back for a 3-2 victory in the day-cap. Southern Vermont sophomore right-hander Jean-Carlos Berasgoico picked up the win with his first start on the hill this season while senior righty Chris Bradt came out of the bullpen to wrap up the victory and earn his first career save.
