Thomas More opened their final D-III season on Friday with a 5-3 win over DePauw at the Birmingham Southern College Tournament at the Hoover Met Complex in Hoover, Alabama. Birmingham-Southern defeated the DePauw Tigers 8-1 to send DePauw to 0-2 in the tournament standings. All eight of BSC's runs were scored by a different player.
Lehman's season started in earnest today as the Lightning traveled to Flemington, NJ to face Centenary in a season opening doubleheader for both teams. Lehman dropped the first game 1-0 but prevailed in game two 10-0. Lehman got two impressive starts on the mound. In the opener Rich Frommelt took the loss as he pitched a complete game scattering five hits and striking out two. In Game two, Jarret Oehler went the distance for the Lightning striking out six and scattering three hits.
Cortland, ranked eighth nationally in Division III, picked up a win and a tie at 22nd-ranked Salisbury in a non-league doubleheader. The Red Dragons won the first game, 6-0, behind a combined shutout from Matt Valin and Dan Hobbes, and the teams played to a 3-3 deadlock in the second game before the contest was called due to darkness after the 12th inning. The tie game is Cortland's first since a 10-10 verdict at Ithaca during the 2012 season. Cortland rallied to tie the nightcap in the top of the ninth and held off three Salisbury threats in extra innings before the game was called.
The Texas-Dallas kicked off a three-game weekend series at No. 3-ranked Texas Lutheran with an 8-2 win over the 2019 NCAA Division III national runner-up. Freshman right-hander Brett Bihm (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win as he spun 6.2 strong innings to push the Comets (3-5) to the victory. The UTD bats gave Bihm all the offense he needed in the top of the 2nd as the Comets posted seven runs to grab a big early cushion.
Mitchell opened the 2019 season with a 6-5 victory over UMass Dartmouth at the New England Baseball Complex. The Mariners trailed 5-3 in the seventh inning before Eric Marriott blasted a three-run homer to provide the game-winning runs. Brian Ricker labored through the final nine outs without giving up a run to earn the save. Roland Thivierge picked up the win by tossing 3.0 innings of middle relief.
UW-Platteville began its 2019 season by splitting a pair of games at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Pioneers (1-1) scored three runs in the 10th inning to beat Millsaps 7-4. The team later fell 4-2 to Belhaven in front of their home fans. The Pioneers had a slow start in the win over Millsaps (1-7) and trailed 4-0 before getting the offense going in the sixth inning. They needed extra frames as Jonathan Kelso drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th before the Pioneers scored two more runs on Major errors. Against Belhaven (3-4), the Pioneers were held hitless in the first four innings and Blazers four-run cushion was enough to hold off the Pioneers for a final score of 4-2.
Bowen Plagge's grand slam in the bottom of the third inning and five shutout innings thrown by Drew Sturgess lifted the St. Mary's (Md) (2-1) over the visiting College of New Rochelle Blue Angels (0-2). The Seahawks received excellent pitching from Sturgess, who threw five scoreless innings and racked up five strikeouts. Tyson Johnson relieved Sturgess in the sixth and recorded a strikeout, but allowed the lone run. Plagge finished two of three from the plate with a grand slam and triple for a team-best five RBI.
Whittier opened up SCIAC play, pulling off a solid 7-3 road win over Redlands. The Purple & Gold came into the game with only one contest under their belt, a 4-2 loss to Willamette compared to Redlands who had played 10. Whittier never trailed on the afternoon grabbing an early 1-0 lead before stretching it to 3-0. UR managed to tie things up midway through but over the final three frames the Poets were able to pull away with four runs that secured the win.

Anderson started their season off strong with a 3-1 win against Heidelberg. This was Anderson's first game of the new season after a doubleheader cancellation last weekend. The Ravens were led by Jonathan Willoughby who went 1-3 from the plate but knocked in two of Anderson's three runs with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. The third run for Anderson also came in the bottom of the first when Thomas Parker batted in Chuck Kidd with a double. Parker went 1-4 in the game. Nick Jones had the third of Anderson's three hits with a single to start off the bottom half of the first inning. Jones finished the game 1-4.
Stevenson seemed unaffected by the 10 am start time on Friday morning as their bats erupted in a 14-3 non-conference victory over Gallaudet in the first game of the Bison Baseball Classic at Hoy Field on the campus of Gallaudet University. Then, in their second contest of the day, they rode a pair of home runs for junior Alex Kidwiler and seven strong frames from graduate student Joe Thompson en route to a 5-1 win over non-conference opponent Marymount.
Kean used a 10 run first inning to breeze past SUNY Old Westbury by the final of 17-3 in non-conference action. Zachary Marzano led the Cougars (4-1) with a 3-for-5 day with four RBI, two runs scored, a double and triple. On the mound, RJ Jobin earned his first collegiate win with a five innings performance. He allowed just one run and four hits.
The University of Dallas cruised past Blackburn 14-2 on the first day of the NCC-Saluki Tournament hosted by Southern Illinois University. Dallas was led by Jordan Stickler who drove in three runs on the night. Four other Crusaders contributed two RBI each. Zachary Taylor shut down the Beavers as he pitched five innings, only allowing one earned run to score on three total hits. Kyle Neel then came into shut the door out of the bullpen as UD rolled to victory. Dallas held Blackburn to four total hits.
Jake Huber singled in Brett Benedetti with the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning and John Hayes finished off a scoreless three-inning stint in the bottom half as Augustana defeated Bates 6-4 to complete a sweep of the teams' season-opening four-game set at Chain of Lakes Park. With the contest tied at 4-4, Benedetti got the winning rally started when he was hit by an Alex Simon pitch with one out in the 10th. Tyler Nunez then walked, prompting a pitching change by the Bobcats. Justin Foley came out of the pen and got Gunnar Haskins to pop to second for out number two. However, Huber grounded a 1-2 pitch just past Bates shortstop Kyle Carter and into center field, plating Benedetti to make it 6-5. Griffen Pschigoda followed with a single to right, scoring Nunez with an insurance run.
Colton Eremian slugged a two-run homer and added a bases-loaded walk for three runs batted in to back the combined four-hit pitching efforts of starter Patrick Maybach and reliever Will Ginsberg in Salve Regina's 7-1 victory over Stevens at Dobbelaar Field. Maybach worked the first six innings and struck out 10 Ducks, including an immaculate inning (bottom of the second) where he threw nine pitches for nine strikes to get all three outs. Ginsberg pitched three scoreless frames and seven of his nine outs came via the strikeout.
After potential storms pushed Louisiana College from hosting a home series to coming to Brownwood, Howard Payne took both games in Friday's doubleheader by scores of 9-3 and 9-2. In game one RJ Roberts finished 2-for-2 with a double and two runs batted in. Jacob Salazar and Manny Torralba both finished 1-3 with 2 RBIsof their own. Bryson Lyro got the win on the bump tossing 6 innings and giving up 3 runs, 2 earned, and striking out 4. In the second game, the Jackets were led by Noah Payne and Manny Torralba who both went 2-4 with 2 RBIs. Chandler Clark got the start on the mound throwing 5.1 innings giving up 1 earned run and grabbing 2 strikeouts.
Pomona-Pitzer defeated SCIAC opponent Caltech 7-4 in game one of their SCIAC three-game series at North Field. The Sagehens were led by junior Brian Knapp who went a perfect 4-4 with four runs scored and one RBI in the win. Junior Tyler Yoshihara got the win for the Sagehens as he went seven innings with 10 strikeouts and four runs surrendered. Freshman Joe Williams got the save for the Sagehens as he came in for the final two innings and did not give up a single hit in his relief outing.
There were no somber faces as the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen walked out of the Kino Sports Complex with the 4-1 victory over the Whitman Blues. Junior Matt Sciumbato came in clutch with runners in scoring position, sending home both the tying and go-ahead runs on day two of the Cactus Classic. Donning the purple and gold uniform for the first time, senior Chris Kovach gave up just one run in his debut – a ground-rule double in the first from Tyler Lewis that brought home Whitman's lone score. The transfer from Oklahoma Baptist went on to concede just one hit in his next four shutout innings and finished the afternoon allowing just four hits and one walk in five innings of work while striking out seven.
