Rhode Island College swept a doubleheader against |
Washington College opened its spring break trip in Florida by sweeping Western Connecticut in a doubleheader on Sunday at Bob Gladwin Stadium. The Shoremen took game one, 9-4, and captured game two, 13-6. Washington is now 5-0 on the season and have won its opening five games for the first time since starting the 1985 season 6-0. The Colonials fall to 0-2. Aaron Barclay led the offense going 3-for-3 (two doubles, home run), four runs and six RBIs.
Jeremy Lhotka was 6-for-6 with four doubles and three RBI's as Coast Guard swept a doubleheader from Finlandia winning the opener 15-3 and the rallying to win the nightcap 11-9 at the Gene Cusic Classic. Dustin Reeder pitched six solid innings allowing just four hits and two earned runs to pick up the win while Tom Ankers and Lhotka were each 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles in the win. Will Stephens' two-out, two-run single in game two gave Coast Guard the lead and highlighted a four-run seventh as the Bears came-from-behind for the 11-9 win. He then came on to pick up his second save of the season pitching the bottom of the seventh.
Vassar got their season started off with a 9-4 win, sparked by freshman Sam Brinster who had three hits including two doubles, a single and a walk in his debut. On the mound captain Mitchell Mullock set the pace going five innings giving up only one earned run, striking out five and scattering six hits. The win is Mullock's first of the season. Following Mullock was junior hurler Billy Mathiesen who went three innings of shut out baseball before handing the ball off to closer Patrick Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald slammed the door with a 1,2,3 ending including two strikeouts.
Franklin & Marshall hit two grand slams as part of a nine-run fourth inning as the Diplomats blanked New Jersey City, 12-0, in game two of its spring trip at the RussMatt College Spring Break Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park on March 10. The game was called after seven innings. After losing a heartbreaking 12-11 contest late Saturday night in a game that lasted more than four hours, the Gothic Knights (0-2) couldn't bounce back as its pitching staff walked more batters (10) than hits allowed (8). F&M, which also shutout RIT—NJCU's opponent on Monday—in an earlier game on Sunday, improved to 5-0 on the season.
A challenging Florida trip jam-packed with strong opponents culminated in a fourth-straight victory Sunday afternoon, capping the nine-day outing at a solid 6-3 overall record. Otterbein used a seventh-inning surge as the difference maker yet again, with four-straight runners reaching base and RBI hits coming from Sam Edgell and third baseman Connor Brett. The 6-3 lead would be more than enough for Cardinal reliever Andy Caddas, who initially entered with the bases loaded and just one out in the sixth. He struck out the next two batters, and never allowed a hit in cleanly finishing the contest. His only blemish was a lone walk en route to facing just one over the minimum.

Shenandoah opened up its 2019 ODAC slate with a 10-8 victory over host Emory and Henry. Shenandoah rallied with four runs in the top of the ninth to down the Wasps. Grant Thompson got the rally started with a double to center before Tristan Baker drew a walk. Luke Nussman then beat out a bunt single back to the pitcher to load the bases. Following a Keegan Woolford pop-out, Jaime Naill singled through the left side to plate Thompson and Baker and tie the game at 8-8. Robert Marcelle then greeted reliever Landon Biddix with a double to left center to bring home Nussman and Naill and provide the final margin of victory. The rally made a winner of senior Brandon McKenzie who got the final out of the E&H eighth. the Hornets made it a sweep with an 8-1 win in game two.
Thiel concluded play at the 2019 Gene Cusic Classic on Sunday with an 11-3 victory over Baruch. The Tomcats scored eight unanswered runs as Thiel starter Will Brandsema went six innings, while allowing just one hit and no runs. Four Tomcats collected multiple hits as Christian Aldrich, Nick Fowkes, Joe Mott, and Anthony Rago each added two hits on the day. Aldrich blasted his second home run of the year on Sunday.
Scranton scored a pair of runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings against Bridgewater State and strong efforts by a trio of pitchers made the runs stand as the Royals defeated the Bears 6-5. Junior Bobby Hegarty earned the win on the mound for the Royals, tossing six innings in which he allowed just one earned run while striking out three batters and yielding five hits. Freshman Ryan Heiser fanned two batters and gave up one run in 1.1 innings of work before turning the ball over to freshman Josh Lydon, who retired the final five Bridgewater batters to record his first collegiate save. Four Royals recorded two hits apiece on the day: sophomore Connor Harding junior Kevin Haag, senior Ian McIntosh, and junior Travis Adams with Haag collecting a pair of doubles.
Louisiana College played their final two games of their four game weekend series with Iowa Wesleyan with two very different kinds of games, but both ending with Wildcat wins. Game one say an offensive barrage from the Wildcats scoring 15 runs with 10 extra base hits in route to a 15-4 win. Game two saw only three combined runs with the Wildcats getting the walk-off 2-1 win on an error in the infield.
Case Western Reserve sophomore Matt Levine pitched seven shutout innings, and sophomore left fielder Jake Ryan and junior centerfielder Samuel Neal each hit their first home runs of the season, as the Spartans defeated Oglethorpe 9-0 in Atlanta, Georgia. The win was the third-straight for the Spartans, who improved to 3-3 overall, while Oglethorpe dropped to 5-10 on the year with the loss. Levine, who picked up the win to improve to 1-0 on the year, faced the minimum through his first six innings of work, and held the Stormy Petrels scoreless on four hits over seven innings of work in the game, throwing just 74 pitches in the effort. He struck out three batters without issuing a walk, and lowered his season ERA to 1.33 through three appearances this year. Ryan went three-for-five at the plate with three runs batted in, two runs scored and a home run. Senior third baseman Jacob Kucia added a two-for-two performance with a run and two RBIs, as the Spartans racked up 10 hits as a team in the game.
The Whitworth Pirates put together another strong offensive showing against Pacific to complete a sweep of the Boxers with a 12-2 win. The Pirates had no errors while the Boxers had two. Whitworth had six players with an RBI, Cody Simmons and Casey Isa had three each. Chase Anderson had both RBIs for Pacific. Ryan Kingma pitched seven innings, allowing two runs. Kingma received the win making his record 3-2. Darren Crosby and Brett Thomas both pitched an inning each to close the game out.

| Pitt-Greensburg (1-6) collected 12 hits and never trailed as it rolled to a 12-9 victory over Salve Regina (2-4), Sunday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Stadium. Wilson took the field for the first time in program history today against the Gallaudet Bison in a non-conference doubleheader. The Phoenix (1-1) split the set of games with the Bison (5-7, 0-0 NEAC) and captured their first win in program history with a 9-2 game two victory. In their landmark win, Hunter Cheek's two-run homer to left gave the Phoenix a comfortable 7-1 lead and was able to finish, winning 9-2 over the Bison.
The Redhawks picked up their second victory in as many days against Susquehanna, using an 11-4 win to move to 2-0 in Florida. Travis Holman struck out 5 over 6 innings and allowed just 2 runs. Jake Seymour picked up the victory in relief. Maddux Ryan and Tre Cunningham also pitched an inning each.
Another day, another crazy game for Carthage (5-4), as the Red Men defeated Bethany Lutheran (0-1), 27-14 in seven innings, in Tucson, Ariz. The game was the opener of a doubleheader. Carthage took out its frustrations on Bethany Lutheran with a 12-run first inning, 10 of those runs after two outs. The Red Men sent 17 batters to the plate in the opening frame, and the 12 runs scored just missed tying a school-record 13 runs set against Elmhurst on April 4, 2006.
Worcester State earned its first win of the season by a wild 14-13 final score in non-conference action at Osceola Heritage Stadium. Freshman Aidan Abernathy grabbed the win on the hill on the day, recording two innings pitched and allowing three earned on four hits. Junior Kevin Larkin led the Lancers with three hits and three runs scored on the afternoon, with Ferrara, Miller, and Kolanda all recording three runs batted in.
Martin Luther salvaged a split in its doubleheader against Central (Iowa) to earn its first win of the season on day three of its annual Florida trip. The Knights lost game one 15-2, but came back to win game two 3-2. Central jumped on the Knights early and didn't relent on the way to a 15-2 win in game one.
First-year starting pitcher MIchael Fromm threw a complete game gem in his first collegiate start to lead MLC to a 3-2 win in game two.
Marietta split of pair of games in the Snowbird Baseball Classic outslugging Arcadia, 15-12, and falling to No. 5 ranked Swarthmore, 11-5. The Pioneers are now 1-4 on the season. Arcadia and Swarthmore are both 2-2 overall. Against Arcadia, every Pioneer in the batting order picked up at least one hit as Marietta finished with 19 hots in the game. Jonathan Pingree led the way collecting four hits in five at bats. He also drove in a pair of runs and scored another. Damian Yenzi went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Fuve other Pioneers had two hits in the game. Freshman Alex Page socked his first career home run and finished with two hits, an RBI and three runs scored.
