Top-ranked Christopher Newport leaned on sophomore right-hander Josh Husby (5-1) and another solid day offensively as the Captains won their ninth straight game with a 10-1 home victory against Mary Washington (6-10, 1-5). CNU improves to 18-2 overall, 7-0 in league play with the win. The potent CNU offense scored in double figures for the fourth straight game and seventh time in the last eight contests, but it was the pitching performance from Husby that stole the show on Friday afternoon. Playing in front of a season-high crowd of over 400 fans at Captains Park, Husby was locked in and allowed just one unearned run on three hits in seven innings of work. Along the way, Husby struck out a career-high 13 batters, tying the second most in a game for a CNU pitcher over the last 12 seasons.
Kelly Holdren entered the bottom of the ninth with a three-run lead and closed out Elizabethtown's 7-4 win over No. 4 Swarthmore.vRobbie Bertucio drove in a pair of runs and he and Tyler McGonigle each homered for the Blue Jays. Swarthmore (12-4), who moved up to No. 4 in the latest national rankings, had won 12 of their first 15 games of the season. The Garnet were also second on the NCAA in team batting average (.373) heading into the day's matchup with Elizabethtown (6-13). Joseph Sarich held Swarthmore to just four hits over six innings of work and as a staff, the Blue Jays only allowed five total in the game. Sarich struck out five batters in his six innings of work before Reece Jones, Anthony Cameron, and Holdren limited the Garnet a one hit over the final three frames.
The No. 25-ranked Washington University earned a pair of wins during its opening day of University Athletic Association (UAA) play against Case Western Reserve University on the road. WashU improved to 15-3-1 (2-0 UAA) on the year with a 7-5 game one victory and 2-1 game two win. John Howard claimed his fifth win of the season as the Bears offense backed the senior hurler with seven runs. WashU tallied nine hits while scoring seven runs to earn its fifth straight win of the year. Sophomore pitcher Ryan Loutos had a strong quality start as he pitched six innings allowing four hits and a run in addition to striking out 11 batters. The double digit strikeout performance is Loutos' second of the year and sixth of his career. Despite the strong performance, sophomore Mitchell Black picked up the win after entering the game in the seventh.
In a story of two different contests, East Texas Baptist would manage to split their doubleheader against the Southwestern Pirates. The Tigers are currently 18-9 overall after the in-regional match up. ETBU would fall in the first game, 13-0, in seven innings as they would have just three hits all game long. Dylan Sumpter would have two of them while Casey Combs had the other one. Derrick Findley suffered his second loss of the season with only 1.2 innings allowing six runs on two hits. Game two was tighter as the Tigers would explode for a home run derby in the late innings to win 6-3. Alan Underwood started and would pitch six innings allowing one run on five hits while striking out eight. Reliever Alek Arellano would get the win with one perfect eighth inning while Chad Boudreaux earned the save in the ninth.
The Loras Duhawks started the game on a slow start, and did not score until the top of the 6th against the Buena Vista Beavers. Sam Marhefke led the Duhawks in a pitcher's dual by throwing seven complete innings with six strikeouts, and allowed only four runners to reach base. The Duhawks rallied late and came away with a 2-1 victory. Marhefke made his longest start of the season with seven complete innings. After allowing the lone Beaver run, Marhefke retired eleven straight hitters. The Duhawks had five hits, which is the lowest amount of hits they've had all season.

Kyle Friebolin pitched four strong innings and Sean McKee knocked in four runs including the game-winning run in the 11th inning to lead the King's to an exciting come-from-behind 10-9 victory over FDU-Florham from Yogi Berra Stadium in Montclair, NJ. The Monarchs overcame a season high five errors with another strong offensive performance. King's racked up 17 hits for the second straight game and stole a season high seven bases. McKee and Dan Hartson continued their dominance of Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) opponents with three hits each. Hartson is now hitting an outstanding .571 in conference games while McKee is batting .360 with 11 runs batted in (RBI).
The Trinity (Conn.) Bantams took a 4-1 NESCAC East victory over the Bowdoin Polar Bears to open conference play at Colby College's Coombs Field. The Bantams are now 10-2 overall with their seventh win in a row, dropping the Polar Bears to 0-11-1. The teams will complete the three-game series tomorrow with a noon doubleheader. A wet field at Bowdoin forced the series to move to Colby's turf field. Trinity had multiple players with multi-hit games. Matt Koperniak went 2-for-5, while Ben Reinisch, Eric Thronson, and Robbie Cronin all went 2-for-4. Koperniak led both teams with two RBIs.
Timely hitting, pitching and hitting came together for Williams as it ran its win streak six games by sweeping a doubleheader from NESCAC foe Colby, 6-3 and 7-5, at Chain of Lakes Park. The Ephs (11-1) and the Mules will face each other in the third and final game of the series Saturday at 10 a.m. In Friday's opener, senior Tom Benz had a decisive three-run home run in the third inning. In the night cap, first-year Matt Aventuro had a spotlight moment, throwing out the tying run at the plate from right field with Williams clinging to a 6-5 lead.
Cortland scored seven times in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie as the Red Dragons defeated Oneonta, 7-0, in a seven-inning contest during Game 1 of a SUNYAC doubleheader. Cortland completed the sweep with a 7-2 win in the nine-inning second game after overcoming an early 2-0 deficit. Cortland (14-8-1, 6-0 SUNYAC) will play a makeup non-league game at Marywood next Wednesday and will travel to Fredonia for a three-game league series April 5-6.
Louisiana College wrapped up their three game series in Longview. The Wildcats would have their 15-game winning streak snapped in the 5-3 loss in game one but responded with their 20thwin of the year in a 10-3 game two victory. The Wildcats take on Centenary next Wednesday at Billy Allgood Field. The win was the 20thof the season for the Wildcats, securing their third straight 20 win season. They picked up their 20thwin in their 26thoverall game, the fastest a team has reached that mark in program history. This is just the second time LC has had three straight 20-win seasons since joining the NCAA.
Keuka opened the 2019 North Eastern Athletic Conference schedule with a 12-4 win on the road at SUNY Cobleskill on Friday. Keuka College (4-9, 1-0 NEAC) was led at the plate by Dan Bamann and Tyler Freedman with three hits apiece. Daniel Steve earned with win on the mound while Tyler Key got his second save of the season.
Penn State Altoona celebrated its first games on campus since 2015 with a doubleheader sweep, defeating non-conference opponent Saint Vincent 10-4 and 3-0 at Stewart Athletic Field. For the past three seasons, the Lions were displaced from their home field on Penn State Altoona's campus due to the construction project to renovate and expand the Adler Athletic Complex. The last time that the team had played on Stewart Athletic Field was April 26, 2015. The Lions (11-7) reclaimed their home field on Friday by continuing their recent surge. The sweep was Penn State Altoona's second in a row, and the team has now won 10 of its last 12 games. The Lions displayed their most well-rounded performances of the season in Friday's doubleheader wins over St. Vincent (10-7).
Jourdan Plaisted launched his first collegiate home run and drove in a career-high four runs to lead Elmira to its first Empire 8 Conference win of the season against Houghton, 12-5. The Soaring Eagles broke out the bats in their 2019 home opener, as EC recorded season highs in runs (12), hits (13), RBIs (10) and extra-base hits (6). Plaisted, a second-year catcher from Walworth, New York, had a career night at the dish to lead the Purple and Gold. He finished 2-for-2 and produced team highs in runs scored (3) and runs driven in (4). Plaisted was one of five Soaring Eagles to post multiple hits. Senior left fielder Harrison Zambarano went 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI batting clean-up, while Tommy Fogarty, Jansen Crossley and Joey Florio each rapped two hits.
