MACC teams get in openers on Tuesday

Trailing by two in the bottom of the 10th inning, Christopher Newport came from behind for a thrilling 6-5 extra-inning victory over Hampden-Sydney (3-3) on Tuesday afternoon. The Captains (4-1) tied the game with a run in the eighth and finished off the rally with three runs in the bottom of the 10th to walk off against the Tigers.

Messiah opened up the 2021 season with a resounding 10-1 victory over the Albright Lions on Tuesday afternoon. Trent Culver and Kasey Caras led the way with a solo home run and triple each while driving in a combined eight runs on the afternoon. On the mound, eight pitchers combined to allow just one run on seven hits in the contest. While the Falcons would eventually put 10 runs on the board, their defense was the storyline in the early going. Despite the strong defensive plays in the field, Messiah's offense looked pretty tame the first time through the order but that changed in the third where the Falcons scored in each subsequent inning. Carson Spangler earned the victory with a scoreless, three-up, three-down third inning.

Averett earned a 4-3 walk-off victory over rival Ferrum for its first win of the 2021 season on Tuesday at Owen-Fulton Field. Averett (1-6) walked it off in the ninth after sophomore Nolan Maccabe singled through the right side for his third hit on the afternoon to lead off the inning. Junior Brandon Hatcher was hit by a pitch to reach first and move Maccabe to second and Maccabe later moved up 90 feet to third following a walk to load the bases. Freshman Zelgin Jackson sent Maccabe home for the winning run when he reached on a fielder's choice RBI to second base. The Cougars finished with four extra base hits on the afternoon out of their nine totals hits.

Hamline (2-0) earned a season-opening sweep over
Crown (2-7) at U.S. Bank Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Pipers compiled 15 hits between the games,
winning the first 3-2 and the second 7-2. Junior
Cullen Buck had an impressive season debut, going a
blazing 5-6 (.833) at the plate with three runs, two
|walks, and two RBIs.

Coe defeated Cornell College 7-1 in a neutral site matchup at Mount Mercy University. The Kohawks scored three early runs and got a solid performance from starting pitcher Matthew Mittelmark, who worked five innings while surrendering just one run. Overall, Coe had 10 hits and six RBI in the contest while recording zero errors. The win improves the Kohawks to 2-1 overall while the Rams drop to 0-3 on the year. TJ Johnson led the offense for Coe on the evening, going 4-of-4 at the dish while adding two RBI and two runs scored. Jacob Henry also recorded a multi-hit game for Coe, going 2-of-4 at the plate while driving in and scoring one run. Isaac Evans and Jordan Kaplan each had one hit in the game for Coe as the pair each had their first doubles of the season. Mittelmark, who pitched five innings and earned the win, struck out three batters while allowing just three hits.

Wilson opened their season on the road taking on the Bobcats of Pitts-Greensburg. The Phoenix (2-0) were firing on all cylinders tonight as they defeated the Bobcats (0-2) in both games of a doubleheader matchup by scores of 12-4 both. he Phoenix capped off their night with a total of five home runs in the game coming off of Dylan Procopio, DeanMercer, freshman Peyton Mason, sophomore Michael Marralle, and junior Gerald Buchanan. Procopio, and Mason both gathered a double while Mercer tallied up three doubles in the game. Wilson finished the game with a total of fourteen hits and zero errors while holding their opponent to just five hits while they committed just one error. Junior Kevin Ehrman records his first win of the season as he finishes the night pitching five innings, striking out seven batters, on his way to the victory.

Olivet split a non-league doubleheader against Saint Xavier (Ill.) this afternoon at Ozinga Field. The Cougars won the first game, 7-3. Olivet used an RBI-double by junior Ben Compton to win the nightcap, 3-2, in eight innings. In the nightcap, the Cougars grabbed a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third inning. The score stayed 2-0 until the top of the sixth inning when senior Logan Sella hit a two-run single to tie the game. The game went to extra innings. In the top of eighth, junior Matt Fisher drew a four-pitch walk. After the second out was recorded, Fisher advanced to second on a wild pitch and then came around to score on Compton's double into the leftfield corner. In the home half of the eighth inning, Saint Xavier left the tying run stranded on base, as the final batter of the game struck out looking.

After coming off an extra innings 4-3 loss against Carroll, Concordia (Wis.) fired away at the Pioneers on Tuesday night. Sophomore Blake Breon pitched five innings for the Falcons, holding the Pioneers to just two hits in the first inning. He would allow a total of five hits within five innings. In the bottom of the first inning, junior Sean Tillmon would begin the scoring drive for the Falcons with a single RBI to right field. He would bring in junior Daniel Hahn. The inning would not end until 12 runs were posted by the home team. Concordia (Wis.) would continue to add on scoring 19 runs in the last four innings. The 31 runs are the second-most scored in program history.

Southwestern avenged an earlier home loss to Texas-Dallas Comets with a 6-4 road victory to win its second straight game. Southwestern got production throughout the lineup. Leadoff hitter Hayden Craig led the Pirates with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, driving in two RBIs with a run scored, and Maxwell Mims and Jacob Tanner had identical 2-for-5 performances with one RBI and run scored each from the middle of the lineup. Landon Durdin and Trent Raschke both produced two-hit games from the eighth and ninth spots, with Rachske driving in a run and Durdin scoring one. That was enough for Trey Schwarz, who pitched a solid 4.1 innings in relief, holding the Comets scoreless while allowing only three hits and one walk with two strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season. It was the third multi-hit game for Mims, who's off to a strong start to his collegiate career, leading the Pirates in hits (10), RBIs (six), and is tied for the lead in runs scored (eight). His .385 batting average leads the team amongst players with more than one start. His five stolen bases are tied for the conference lead.

Hawks took game one 3-1 and fell in game two 4-1.

Lynchburg routed William Peace, 17-2, at home on Tuesday afternoon to win its third game in a row. Lynchburg's offense was led by Garret Jackson who went 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI and Parker Shaffer who drove in three of the 17 Hornet runs. Hornet pitching only allowed four hits on the afternoon and just two runs, neither of which were earned. Starter Wesley Arrington recorded his first win of the season going five innings with three hits and four strikeouts. Sophomore Colby Hutnan retired the side and struck two Pacers in the ninth in his first collegiate appearance.

York College opened the 2021 campaign with an offensive explosion as the Spartans rolled past Lebanon Valley 15-2 in non-conference action on a beautiful Tuesday at Jaquet Field. The Spartans blew the game open in the first inning with nine runs as they finished the day with 16 hits including six doubles, one triple and a pair of home runs. The Spartans were playing their first MAC Commonwealth opponent since joining the conference but the game was a non-conference contest because the two teams are not slated to meet during the Commonwealth slate. Commonwealth teams miss out on two opponents during the eight-week regular season and the Dutchmen and Stevenson are York's two misses on their 2021 schedule.

Mitchell came away with an 11-4 victory over Fisher College in seven innings on Tuesday afternoon. Leadoff hitter Jeremy Sagun went 1-for-3 with a double and four RBI on the day to lead the Mariners. Anthony Laureano went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI while Matt Falk also drove in a pair of runs. Jakari Pellegrini picked up his second win of the young season by tossing 4.0 innings in relief. He allowed two runs on six hits and struck out three.

Newly-minted #1 Trinity (Texas) jumped in front early to secure a 10-5 road win over McMurry on Tuesday evening. The Tigers got the bats going early with four runs on two hits in the top of the first to take the early lead. After sandwiching a double between two walks to load the bases, Jack Vonderhaar crushed a grand slam to account for the four-run inning. Trinity kept it going in the second inning as well, adding two more runs on three more hits to take a 6-0 lead. Rafe Chaumette got the inning going with his run-scoring single. McMurry got two of the runs back in the bottom of the inning with a two-run single. The home team also took advantage of a passed ball to make one of those runs unearned. After an uneventful third inning by both teams, Vonderhaar went back to work in the fourth, plating two more runs to put the Tigers up 8-2 at the time. Trinity added single runs in the fifth and eighth innings to reach double digits, scoring on an RBI double from Mason Meredith, and a solo homer off the bat of Michael Herrera The War Hawks attempted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth with three unearned runs, but the Tigers held on in the end to take the win. Trinity has now won 10 consecutive games, dating back to last season. The Tigers won three straight games before the season was shut down, and the team now stands 7-0 to start 2021.
