McMurry University picked up its second win in a row on Friday night, sending the Walt Driggers crowd home happy with a 5-4 victory over LeTourneau to open a three-game American Southwest Conference series. The War Hawks (2-9, 1-6 ASC) earned its first home win of the season behind a season high 13 hits – four of which were of the multi-base variety – while slowing down the YellowJackets (5-10, 3-4 ASC) in the final two frames to squeak out the win. With the decision still in hand, head coach John Byington turned things over to freshman Dylan Schafer. The rookie righty recorded the final out of the seventh inning, stranding the tying run on third with just one pitch. Schafer impressed in the final two frames, retiring six straight for his first collegiate save. He recorded two punch outs in the process.

Concordia used the big inning to win the opener against Crown but was done in by the big inning in game two and settled for a split with the Storm. The Cobbers used a 6-run second inning to win the first game 10-2 but then gave up a 4-run third frame in the finale and fell 5-4. The Top 3 in the batting order provided the offensive spark for the Cobbers. The trio of Andy Gravdahl, Thomas Horan and Matt Gruber combined to hit .542 (13-for-24), drive in nine runs and scored six times. Ty Syverson earned his second win in as many starts. He pitched the first 5.2 innings, struck out nine and allowed only three hits and two earned runs. The second game centered around the third inning. The Cobbers took a 3-0 lead but the lead would be short-lived as Crown scored four time in the bottom of the inning. The culprit was once again the long ball. The Storm hit three homers in the inning which produced all four of the runs.

Loras (5-1, 2-0 A-R-C) made the long trip to Lincoln, Neb. to take on the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves (2-6, 0-2 A-R-C) to open their 2021 American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) schedule. Sophomore Max Cullen had a stellar day at the plate for the Duhawks, tallying five RBIs on four hits between the two games, joined by Joe Egan and Nick DiBenedetto who each drove in three runs in game two to help the Duhawks secure two victories in their first A-R-C matchup of the year. Game one of the afternoon saw the two teams battle defensively with the game staying scoreless until the Duhawks took off in the top of the fourth inning. Carroll smacked a double in the bottom of the ninth to score a run and stay alive, sending the game into extra innings. With the score locked, the Regents had the last say by scoring a run from an error in the top of the 11th inning to lead 4-3.

Louisiana College put on an offensive clinic in its doubleheader against Sul Ross State, putting up a total of 27 runs to sweep the two games from the Lobos, 16-11 and 11-4 Friday night at Kokernot Field. The trend for the day was set almost immediately as Christian Vandergrift came up second and deposited a pitch over the right field wall. Despite each team putting runs on board the result was in doubt to the final out. Sul Ross started off game two quicker, taking a 1-0 lead after one inning of play. But then LC took things a lot slower to build up a big lead. Adding single runs for seven straight innings, starting in the second, they capped the day with a four run ninth to salt the game away.

In game one of the weekend series, Piedmont claimed a 4-2 win over Huntingdon Friday evening at Loudermilk Field in large part thanks to a 3-run bomb from Jack Bartlewski in the fifth inning. Sam Carpenter had another stellar outing moving his record to 5-1 with another start without allowing an earned run. Impressive defensive plays were aplenty Friday as Carpenter proved pitchers are athletes too with a pair of impressive barehanded plays for the out at first.

Lawrence University powered to a nonconference sweep of the University of Minnesota Morris on Friday at US Bank Stadium. Lawrence rolled to a 16-2 victory in five innings in the opener and scored late in the nightcap to pull away for a 7-3 win over the Cougars. In the second game, it took a few innings for the Lawrence bats to get going, but the Vikings won it with a pair of big innings.

Hope rallied late in the eight inning of game two against Calvin to sweep the Knights in a doubleheader Friday afternoon. The Flying Dutchmen won the first game 5-2 in seven-innings, and 9-8 for the second nine-inning game, improving their record to 5-2 overall. Hope has won its last five games in a row. Miller held on strong at the mound all game, allowing just one more run in the seventh inning. The senior from Coldwater allowed just seven hits, striking out three and walking one. For the second game, Calvin scored first again, but back-and-forth scoring action marked most the game until the Flying Dutchmen took the final lead in the eighth inning.

On a balmy day with the winds gusting near 30 miles per hour at Caven Point Field and turning base hits into sliced golf shots, New Jersey City University picked up a stellar home-opening win on Friday afternoon. The Gothic Knights, led by junior knuckleballer Paul Tannucilli, picked up the 7-0 win over Rutgers-Camden. NJCU (2-3) earned its second straight victory, and second of the 2021 season, on Friday as they controlled the game all day long against the Scarlet Raptors (0-1). Tannucilli shined on the mound for seven innings of scoreless ball, striking out a career-high eight batters on six hits. The junior cruised through his first four innings before facing any adversity. Tannucilli concluded his dominant performance with a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh, striking out two to finish the inning and his day with 106 pitches. Sophomore Aaron Ayers, already in the midst of his own good year as a reliever, entered the game and finished out the final two innings.

Greenville is glad to be in the SLIAC. After nine non-conference losses, the Panthers defeated Iowa Wesleyan in two games on Friday to earn their first victories of the young season. In game one, the Panthers received a 3-for-3 hitting performance from Mark Islas in taking an 8-5 win. Jaxen Gibson earned his first win of the season with six innings pitched, and Hunter Cullum only allowed one unearned run in three innings for the save. In game two, Greenville broke up a 0-0 deadlock with a run on an error in the bottom of the fifth, and Landon Mokris and Dustin Sutton delivered RBI singles in the seventh to give GU a 3-0 win. Sophomore Ryan Upton faced the minimum number of batters through six innings to help Olivet College beat Trine University, 9-6, this afternoon in its home-opener at the Cutler Athletic Complex. The Comets wasted no time in scoring, as they used six hits to push across five runs in the first inning and added two more runs in the third inning to make the score 8-0. In the ninth inning, the Thunder plated three runs and brought the tying run to the plate. A fly out to right field ended the game.

St. Thomas (Texas) claimed their 12th win of the year with a 10-7 victory over Southwestern. It was a three-run first inning homerun by Caleb Edmonds that opened things up for the Celts. With the 3-0 advantage, UST was able to ease into game and rely on their defense until the fourth inning when they would plate three more runs. After walking in a run, Jason Brown would step into the box with the bases load. A 2 RBI single to left field would push the Celts' lead to six. Southwestern wouldn't go away that easy, searching for some late-inning heroics. In the bottom of the seventh, they would score four runs, while the Celts would cycle through three pitchers to weather the Pirate's momentum. In the top of the ninth, UST created some breathing room with a four-run inning to extend their lead back to six. A Parker Edwards 2 RBI double would take the life out of the Pirates and allow the Celts to secure their first ever conference victory.
