Schaly nets 600th win

GREENVILLE, Pa. – Thiel College baseball head coach Joe Schaly earned his 600th career win on Thursday, as the Tomcats defeated the Geneva Golden Tornadoes, 11-8, in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game.

Schaly earned 165 wins in six seasons at Point Park and today earned his 435th win in his 23rd season at Thiel.

The Tomcats took control of the game early with a four-run third inning and three-run fourth inning to gain a 7-1 lead. In the seventh inning, the Tomcats lead was down to 7-3 but they responded with four runs. The Golden Tornadoes chipped away with five runs in the eighth but were held scoreless in the ninth as the Tomcats won 11-8.

Trey Williams (Jeromesville, Ohio/Hillsdale) hit a two-run home run, his second of the season. Williams, Jamin Wentling (Greenville, Pa./Greenville), and Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) each scored a run. Wentling reached base safely in all four plate appearances with a hit and three walks. Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union) doubled, scored a run, and led the Tomcats with three RBIs. Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) went 2-for-4 with a double, a run, and three RBIs. Anthony Rago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) also notched two hits with a run, RBI, and stolen base.

On the mound, Richard Crooks (Milan, Ohio/Edison) earned his second win of the season in a quality start, tossing six innings of three-run ball with five strikeouts. Alex Lutz (Loveland, Ohio/Milford) tossed a shutout seventh inning. Charlie Luedtke (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) earned two strikeouts without allowing a baserunner. Jamin Wentling (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) closed out the game with a shutout ninth and a strikeout to tally his third save of the season.

For Geneva, Tim Hermansen notched three hits, three RBIs, and two runs. Jaymes Campbell was charged with the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) in four innings of work.

The Tomcats will head to Geneva to complete the series in a doubleheader on Saturday. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
