Greensboro shocks Averett, CNU rolls to another win

Eastern Mennonite played its first midweek home game on Tuesday, taking on Mary Baldwin at Royals field. After giving up a pair of runs in the first, the Royals offense plated four in their half of the first and never looked back as they picked up a 9-2 win over the Fighting Squirrels. Cole Bashinski led all hitters going 3-for-4 with a double and triple. He scored three times. The quartet of Brendon Barrett (pictured), Skylar Lacks, Colby Eidson and Trey Deane pitched stellar out of the bullpen, keeping MBU scoreless over the final seven innings. They gave up just six hits while striking out eight.

Senior starter Dylan Weber (2-0) fired six scoreless innings of one-hit ball to lead Christopher Newport to a sixth straight win to open the 2023 season. The Captains downed Hampden-Sydney, 11-2 on Tuesday, as the bats blasted eight extra-base hits to carry the offense, including home runs by Justin Bowers and Kevin Mackmin. Christopher Newport improved to 6-0 to start the year for just the fourth time in program history after breaking the game open with a five-run third inning. CNU scored twice more in the fifth and tacked on four runs in the bottom of the eighth. The pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts while issuing just two walks led by Weber's quality start. The senior southpaw retired the lineup in order the first time through with six strikeouts over the first three innings. After being staked to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third, Weber allowed an infield single in the fourth for his only hit allowed. He promptly picked off the runner and added his seventh K of the game. In the fifth and sixth, a pair of errors allowed two more baserunners, but Weber worked around it with two more strikeouts. The Coast 2 Coast teams are a combined 13-0 so far this season.

Freshman Evan Sykes, Senior Connor Morehouse and this week's USA South Rookie of the Week, Freshman Brody Gardner each hit double's, while Freshman Hudson Powell and Junior Cameron Edmonds both drove in runs to help Greensboro pull off their second come from behind 10-inning game in three days, as they defeated Averett, 3-2. Five Pride pitchers combined for nine strikeouts and three walks, with Junior Alex Trepper coming away with the win. It was the first road trip of the year for Greensboro and their first against an ODAC opponent. With the victory, the Pride moves to 3-1 on the season.

Maryville and Berry played a wild one in Georgia on Tuesday afternoon. Really wild. But that didn't slow down the Scots. They kept their winning ways on track. Maryville survived 8-6 in 10 innings to improve to 6-0 on the young season. The Scots pounded out 15 hits and improved the team batting average to .344. Maryville through six games is averaging 9.0 runs. Gabriel Lopez, Zac Graham and Hunter Thaxton were the big sticks Tuesday, combining to go 10-for-14 with a homer, six runs scored and seven RBIs. Christian Carlton with a sacrifice fly in the first accounted for the other run driven in. "Coach Drew Henry had a good plan and when we stuck to that plan and didn't try to do too much, it showed," Scots head coach Clint Helton said. "Especially Gabe, Graham and Thaxton. What doesn't show in the box score is that Jimmy Meredith hit lasers in three of his five at bats and finished 1-for-5.

Franklin & Marshall (1-2) claimed its first win of the 2023
season at Cabrini (1-1), 6-4, Tuesday afternoon. The
Diplomats used a big four-run second inning to get out in
front of the Cavaliers early in the contest. Cabrini cut the
deficit to two in the sixth, but the Diplomats kept the hosts
off the scoreboard in the seventh inning as the game was
called due to darkness.

Juniors Bobby Ayscue and Ty Lowe continued their red-hot hitting, and junior pitcher Brendan McComber twirled five scoreless innings to lead Mary Washington to an 8-3 victory over Gettysburg on Monday afternoon at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles move their early record to 4-0. Lowe walked, doubled and singled and Ayscue homered, walked and singled, scoring three runs and driving in two. McComber gained the win, allowing six hits and no runs in five innings, with two walks and two strikeouts.

Wells opened their season at home Monday night with a big win over a non-conference foe, the Defenders of Clarks Summit, 10-4. The Senior Austin Jordan got the start for the Express and went five innings giving up only three runs and striking out four. He was relieved by first-year pitcher Mason Smith who threw two scoreless innings striking out 1. Mike Nascimento closed out the game for Wells College in the 9th to help the Express secure their first win of the season. On offense, the Express bookended the game with four runs in the first and four in the final inning.

In his 38th season at the helm, head coach Ross Natoli reached 750 career wins as Catholic moved to 3-0 on the season with an 11-5 road victory over St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals offense was clicking on all cylinders as they hung 11 runs on the Seahawks. Catholic used seven pitches in the contest as the bullpen was especially effective. Henry Escandon allowed just one hit over the fourth and fifth innings, striking out two while Chance Legere pitched a beautiful sixth, sending the Seahawk down one-two-three and fanning two. Camden Mounts and Brendan Martin were also spotless as neither allowed a hit.

FDU-Florham opened its season with a 13-8 non-conference victory over New Jersey City on Tuesday afternoon at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark. FDU-Florham (1-0) went ahead 6-1 after just one inning of play much in thanks to senior Jimmy Finnerty's three run home run to left center field. The bats for the Devils produced 13 runs on 11 hits as they scored in five of the eight frames, while the arms surrendered 13 hits and eight runs after a great start on the bump by first-year Nick Rizos. In his first collegiate start, Rizos went four innings, allowed one earned run and struck out six in the no decision. Eli Gonzalez picked up the win after he tossed the seventh and eighth innings. Seven of the nine starters for FDU-Florham recorded at least one hit with Aaron Santos and Brody Donovan leading the way with two knocks apiece.

Whittier hit the road for the first time this season to take on Hope International in a non-conference game. The Poets were able to score some late runs and get their first victory of the year by a score of 9-8. The Poets jumped on the Royals early in this game, scoring 2 runs in the first but found thenselves down 5-3 after six. The Poets inched back with a Lew Rice came to the plate in the top of the seventh and took the lead for good with two in the eight and three in the ninth. Barrett would then enter the game from left field to close it out for the Poets on the mound. After loading the bases, Teige was able to get the Royals to roll into a fielder's choice and hit a deep sac fly. Hope would have runners at second and third with two outs. Barrett was then able to bear down and strike the final guy out looking to give the Poets their first victory.

Belhaven pulled in their first win of the season on Tuesday when a two-run 7th inning sent them past rivals Millsaps, 4-3, in the first matchup of the 2023 Maloney Series. The visitors were the ones who got the early momentum as Belhaven started their defense of the Cowboy Maloney Series trophy. Belhaven, who has won eight straight against their crosstown rivals, found themselves down early to the Majors who scored to open the first inning. Trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the 7th, Belhaven would find themselves in the lead for the first time as Dawson Albin produced a sacrifice fly that scored Kyle McLaughlin before a passed ball allowed Nick Lucido to score the go ahead run. The Blazers' would then slam the door shut in the final two frames as Jacob Doyle and Brett Sanchez combined to keep Millsaps off the board giving Belhaven an important first win of the year.

The Huntingdon Hawks, now 4-1 overall defeated the Petrels of Oglethorpe with a final score of 8-6. Tucker Duke earns his first save of the season as he helps lift the Hawks past the Petrels. Scoring in the bottom of the first, second, and third innings, the Hawks found themselves sitting with a 5-0 lead on Oglethorpe. Oglethorpe tried to regain ground in the fourth with a triple to bring a runner and a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to three (5-2). The Hawks answered those runs with three of their own in the bottom of the fourth when Noah Phillips brought in Jabaz Sampson for his third run of the night. Cade Morgan and Innes Mackay also added a RBI in the inning. (8-2). The Petrels scored one in the fifth to try and begin their comeback. With a two run home run they found themselves down three at the top of the sixth inning (8-5). That is when Tucker Duke came to the mound to close out the game for the Hawks as he saw 13 batters and struck out sixth of them to allow one more run for the Petrels and boost the Hawks to their fourth win this season.

Austin had only five hits against Dallas Christian on Tuesday night, but the 'Roos drew 11 walks and had six hit batters on their way to a 12-5 win over the Crusaders at Baker Field. The 'Roos are now 2-1 on the year. Trystan Mallory earned the win in relief for Austin College, giving up zero runs and no hits in 3.0 innings of work with four strikeouts. Trapani finished 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the 'Roos at the dish, while Hill drew three walks, scored three runs, and drove in two runs in the win.

Senior center fielder Mitchell Salvino, first-year right fielder Paul Ramseur, and junior designated hitter Julian Domenech combined for four home runs to power Washington and Lee to a 12-6 win over Castleton on Tuesday evening. The four home runs by the W&L offense is the most since hitting five in the second game of a doubleheader on April 16, 2013, against Shenandoah. Salvino led the way with a 3-for-4 performance at the dish, adding a single and two additional runs scored to his pair of solo home runs. Lefty first-year pitcher Bob Burr (1-0) earned the win with a promising first outing. Burr entered in the fifth inning with two outs and proceeded to work 3.1 innings on the mound without giving up any runs and only three hits. Burr also ended with two punchouts and zero walks.

Northern Vermont University-Lyndon took to the diamond for the first time on Tuesday afternoon, traveling south to take on NCAA Division II Virginia State University. The Hornets kicked off the season in a big way, defeating the host Trojans 7-3 in the first game of the doubleheader. Lyndon nearly completed the sweep, but fell 5-4 in 10 innings in the nightcap. Sophomore left hander Carlos Rodriguez started and earned the win in the opener. Dale Ostermann came on to close things out in relief.

Texas-Dallas defeated St. Thomas (Texas) 7-3 at Constellation Field Tuesday night. The Comets (3-1) got on the board in the top of the first when second baseman Andrew Skivington led off with a double and designated hitter Grayson Coltharp drove him in with a base hit down the right field line. The Celts (5-2) tied it up in the bottom of the frame when Cameron McClure walked and scored on a Jeffery Williams hit. UTD took control of the game with a four-run fifth inning. Coltharp singled in Skivington, who led off with a walk, and first baseman Robert Hines hit a bases loaded triple in the inning. UST picked up another run in the fifth to make the game 5-2, but the Comets added two more runs on hit by Kade Turnage in the sixth. The Celts scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth for the final 7-3 score. St. Thomas outhit UTD 15-11.
