Feast or famine for Presidents on Monday

Penn State Berks won by scores of 7-1 and 9-8 to earn a pair of wins over Wells in United East action. Those two wins, along with a 17-10 triumph on Sunday, gave the Nittany Lions a three-game series sweep over the Express.

Evan Sante smacked a walk-off double off the wall to help Washington & Jefferson to a split of Monday's Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Grove City at Ross Memorial Park, winning 201 in game two and dropping the opener 13-6. The Wolverines put up eight runs on the top of the second inning and cruised to the victory in the opener. Grove City, who had hit just four home runs in 19 games this season, tallied three home runs in the game one win. The Presidents earned the win in the ninth when Zaas led off with a double down the right field line. Sante then delivered the game-winning hit with a RBI double off the wall that plated John Klein.

After a two-day delay, Clarkson tangled with the RIT Tigers, and the two teams came away with a split, as the Golden Knights took the first contest 5-3 and RIT claimed victory in game two 4-2 on Monday at Jack Phillips Stadium. The Knights picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth of game one when Doyle singled home Robert Whalen to put the score at 5-3. RIT had a chance in the ninth when Ian Libby singled to right to lead off the inning, but a popped up bunt and fielder's choice kept runners out of scoring position and a groundout to second ended the contest. The Tigers would not trail in the second game, scoring two quick runs in the first.

Senior closer Tyler Dasilva-Medeiros equaled the program's all-time saves record as Bridgewater State posted a 6-3 victory over Gordon on Monday afternoon at J. Tec White Field. Dasilva-Medeiros tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to notch his fourth save of the season and 15th of his career. The senior righthander tied the Bears' career mark set by Kevin O'Leary in 1996 and equaled by BSU Hall of Famer Fred Martin in 1998. Dasilva-Medeiros retired six of the eight batters he faced including one strikeout. Senior centerfielder Sean Goudey reached safely four times to highlight the Bears' offense. Goudey went 3-for-3 with a pair of bunt singles and a walk. He scored a run and knocked in one.

Kalamazoo played its MIAA opener against Albion at home on Monday afternoon. What was scheduled to be a seven-inning and nine-inning doubleheader turned into a single nine-inning game due to weather and field conditions. Nevertheless, the Hornets prevailed in their conference opener, defeating the Britons 13-6. Thomas Sylvester (4-1) got the win after pitching five innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks while striking out eight. Brenden Oprinski threw two shutout innings with a strikeout. Braden Mussat surrendered a run on two hits in the eighth, and Blake Parpart finished the game out in the ninth. The Hornet offense collected 10 hits, 15 walks, and was hit by a pitch six times.

Manhattanville completed a sweep of Skyline foe Saint Joseph's Brooklyn to open up the week on Monday afternoon. The 10-5 and 12-6 wins improves the Valiants' record to 8-9 overall and 3-1 to open up conference play. The Valiants scored in four of their six innings at the plate, hanging a trio of three spots en route to the victory in the opener. Michael Musantry accounted for half of the Valiants' runs as he drove in five to lead the effort at the dish. Tyler Mandel drove in three runs of his own. The story of the doubleheader finale was TJ Fuerst as the sophomore came out of the pen to provide some much needed relief with a gem of an outing.

Rochester used two big innings to pull away from Hobart for a 17-7 Liberty League victory this evening. The Yellowjackets used a four-run fourth to seize the lead and then scored five in the eight to break the game open. Will Jones, Ty Gallagher and Michael Whiteherse each finished with two hits for the Statesmen. Whiteherse also stole four bases and scored three runs. Jones and Christian Petry each recorded two RBIs. Luke Gregory paced UR with three hits, three runs and two RBI. He counted a triple and an inside-the-park home run among his hits. Josh Leadem went 1-for-2 with three walks, four stole bases and four runs scored. Rochester's five pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts, including six by starter Dillon Bevan.

No. 12 Catholic's bats remained lively as they completed a sweep of Drew on Monday to remain undefeated in Landmark Conference play. Every Catholic starter registered a hit and seven of the nine came through with multi-hit games as the Cardinals hung 11 runs on the Rangers less than 24 hours after hitting them for 25 in game two of the series yesterday. Danny Fitzgerald started on the mound for Catholic, earning the win. The junior scattered eight hits over 6.2 innings and only allowed one earned run. Relievers Cormac Terry and Skylar McLean combined to finish the job for the Cardinals.

The Aurora Spartans wrapped up the opening weekend of the 2023 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference slate with a doubleheader sweep of Illinois Institute of Technology, winning game one 13-11 and game two 10-6. In the opener, IIT scored twice in the eighth and again in the ninth. The winning run came to the plate in the ninth but Carlos Garcia closed the door for Nick Malmberg and the Spartans 13-11 win. AU build a 10-6 lead in the nightcap, cruising to a win by this four run margin.

The Wheaton (Ill.) Thunder concluded its three-game series against No. 16 North Central (11-7, 0-3 CCIW) on Monday afternoon. Nine runs for the Thunder in top of the third inning helped key the win as the 'Orange and Blue' bested the Cardinals 12-6. The Thunder improve to 11-8 overall and 3-0 in CCIW play. Combined with today's victory, Wheaton's three victories in this series marks the first time the Thunder pick up a sweep of the three-game regular season series against North Central since 2012. Larken LancasterThunder starting pitcher Jared Kloth worked four innings, allowing three runs, on three hits, with one strikeout and two walks. Nathan Hedlund (2-1) earned the win in four innings of relief. Hedlund allowed two runs, on six hits, with two strikeouts and no walks. Simeon Downing tossed one inning of relief as he allowed one run, on two hits, with one walk.

In the second day of a four-game neutral series against UW-Whitewater, UW-Oshkosh split the games with a 4-5 loss in the first game and a 6-5 win in the second. The season series now sits at two games a piece. In game one, Donovan Brandl singled to put one on in the top of the ninth and advanced to second on an Alex Najera groundout. Bennett Frazer sent in the go ahead run with a single to left center. Whitewater had two runners on base later in the inning but stranded both on a groundout. Sam Paden pitched against the Titans in the bottom of the ninth. Shiu singled down the left field line but was thrown out attempting to extend it to a double. Paden then struck out Mason Kirchberg and Connor Giusti to wrap up the game and earn his first save of the year. UW-Whitewater tied game two at 5-5 in the top of the eighth. UWO's Jake Andersen recorded the go ahead RBI in the bottom of the eighth, singling to left to score Owen Housinger on two outs. Logan King recorded two strikeouts in the ninth with a forced groundout to put the Warhawks down in order and record the win.

Hope successfully grabbed wins in two of three games in the MIAA opening series with Alma College. The Flying Dutchmen won the doubleheader portion on Monday after being reschedule due to inclement weather. Hope topped Alma 4-2 in game one and 7-3 in game two. Hope began game one with the home team scoring three quick runs in the bottom of the second. The Scots tried to fight back with runs scored in the fourth and the fifth inning, but the Flying Dutchmen defense along with senior pitcher Shane Hykin kept Alma at bay. Game two went scoreless until the bottom of the third when Hope broke through the tie with a sacrifice fly and built on their lead in both the bottom of the sixth and seventh, Alma scored their first runs of the game, climbing back to make it a one-run game, in the top of the eighth inning but could get no closer.

Webster was back in action Monday afternoon when they traveled to Carlinville, Illinois, to wrap up their three-game series against the Blackburn Beavers. The Gorloks picked up two wins on the day as they won the first game by a final score of 11-4 and the second game by a final score of 13-3 to improve to 11-8 on the season and 5-1 in SLIAC play. After getting suspended due to sunlight in the ninth inning yesterday, the Gorloks were able to finish off the Beavers this afternoon to improve to 10-8 on the season. They got on the board early and often as they scored a run in the top of the first, two runs in the top of the second, and a run in the top of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Webster rallied for 16 hits in their second game of the day.

Mount Saint Vincent made their second consecutive trip to Newburgh on Monday, finally taking on Mount Saint Mary College after weather postponed the original meeting on Sunday. The Dolphins took two games from the Knights, game one by a score of 10-0 and game two by a score of 17-6. Andrew Geiger took the hill for the Dolphins in game one, looking to not only lead his team to a win, but to also continue his stellar 2023 campaign. Geiger tossed a complete game shutout, going seven innings only allowing three hits and striking out nine in the process. The Dolphins gave junior pitcher/outfielder Sean Kennedy the nod in game two. Kennedy hurled 5.1 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) while striking out four along the way. Kennedy got run support early, as the Dolphins offense got off to a hot start yet again. This time the Dolphins scored five runs in the first inning to jump ahead of the Knights before they could come to bat.

Penn State Behrend split the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opener against La Roche, claiming a 16-2 win in game one and falling 16-6 in game two on Monday. Behrend tallied seven singles, three doubles and one triple in the first inning alone to generate 14 runs. The tables were turned in the nightcap. La Roche returned the favor from game one, scoring 16 runs on 14 hits.

Ithaca completed the three-game sweep of St. Lawrence University by winning both ends of a Liberty League doubleheader at Freeman Field on Monday as IC combined for 17 runs and 29 hits in 7-6 and 10-3 victories. The Saints tied game one, 6-6, in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI double, followed by a two-run single. Ithaca regained the lead, 7-6, in the bottom of the sixth on a no-doubt lead off homer by Louis Fabbo to left field, which ended up being the game-winning hit. IC wasted no time building a lead as the Bombers scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Ithaca put the game away in the bottom of the sixth as Ryan Laubscher cleared the bases with a double to left-center to give IC a 9-0 lead. St. Lawrence scored three runs in the ninth inning to account for the 10-3 final score.

Skidmore scored 14 runs on 18 hits on the way to a 14-5 Liberty League East win over Bard Monday afternoon at Castle Diamond. It was the home opener for the Thoroughbreds who take the weekend series from the Raptors. Trey Bourque had a career-high five hits, including the home run and double. He scored three runs and had three RBI and boosted his batting average to .390. Behind the plate he threw out two runners trying to steal. Donald Evans (2-0) got the win in relief. He went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. He struck out four and walked two. Christian Giresi finished the game with two scoreless innings, including three strikeouts. Skidmore has scored 10 or more runs in eight of 19 games this season. "The weather made a difficult Hershey course really tough. We struggled in round one but were able to make some adjustments in round two and jump up five spots. Proud of our guys for never giving up. We hope to build on this experience and give a strong showing at our home event in Ballston Spa next weekend", said Coach Tom Oppedisano.

On Monday afternoon, Anna Maria hosted the Elms College Blazers for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader at New England Baseball Complex and won both games 6-0 and 6-3. Junior starting pitcher Anthony Pingeton threw a complete game five-hit shutout for his fourth win of the season, striking out seven Blazers against only a single walk. The win improved Pingeton's record to 4-1 and extends his win streak to three games in his last three decisions. In game two, the AMCATS spotted the Blazers a pair of runs in the first inning but came back to score three runs of their own in the second inning. After the Blazers tied the game in the top of the third the AMCATS again put their second consecutive three spot up in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore starting pitcher Michael Shorey went all nine innings for his second straight complete game. He allowed only three runs over nine innings while scattering nine hits. He struck out five and didn't walk a batter, completing the game on only 104 pitches, 75 for strikes.
