The Mass-Maritime Bucs hosted Rivier on Sunday to close out their busy, five games in three days slate this weekend. The Buccaneers handled the Raider in both games, winning the first game 9-4 and the second 3-0. AJ Pietrafesa recorded his 100th career hit in the first game and Brenden Baiardi tied the program record for career saves in game two with the 14th of his career.

Putting together some big innings and getting runs at key moments, Clarkson was able to earn a doubleheader sweep against UW-Eau Claire, taking game one 10-4 and winning the second contest 9-8 in extra innings on Sunday. In game one, Clarkson broke the game open in the bottom of the third with five runs. Game two again saw Clarkson put up a crooked number in the early going but still needed some late magic in the seventh to send the game to extras. Clarkson got the game-winning run in the top of the ninth. James Mason reached on an error and advance to second. A ground out sent him to third, putting pinch-hitter Robert Whalen in a solid spot. Whalen ripped a shot back up the middle to score Mason, and Derrick Lewis took care of the rest, finishing off 3.2 innings of relief work with a scoreless ninth. Lewis earned the win, scattering four hits and striking out two. Pagano was 2-for-4, Wilson 2-for-5, Fratangelo 2-for-3 with three runs, and Vardion was 2-for-4. Maslowski went 1-for-3, but drove in four runs.

Senior Ben Jerome drew a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning to help Nichols walk-off against the WPI Engineers on Sunday, March 17, from Nichols College Baseball Field in the team's home opener. The Bison topped the Engineers 12-11 to win their fourth straight game. Senior Johnny Knox was the star of the game for the Bison going 5-6 with a grand slam, a double, and 5 RBI for the day, while making key defensive plays at short stop. Sophomore Dylan Moran and graduate student Will Kleinhenz each added three hits, while Will Nath and Jerome each walked three times for the Bison. On the mound, junior Clark Churchill (2-0) continued his hot week, grabbing the win in three innings of work out of the bullpen. Churchill fanned three batters and allowed one hit. Freshmen Houston Wills helped the Bison out of a tough spot in the sixth inning, to set up Churchill for the wins.

SUNY Old Westbury continues to dominate as they defeated Lehman College in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, 21-7 and 11-2. Coming off two big wins against Yeshiva on Friday, the Panthers offense continued its powerful surge. Several Panthers had multi-hit days and big-time performances. Leading the charge was left fielder, Mike Petrucelly who hit for the cycle featuring a single, double, triple, and homerun. He finished the first game with four hits, three runs, and six RBIs. Jamie Barrios was another big-time performer in the early game. Barrios recorded three hits, two runs, and an RBI. One of Barrios' hits was a double to left center field. The starting short stop, Brian McCloskey also had a three-hit day. McCloskey finished with two runs, one RBI and two doubles. He also had a stolen base. On the mound, Louis Pizzileo picked up the win. He pitched for four innings and allowed five hits, four runs and three walks. Pizzileo struck out eight batters. In relief, Joe Morreale notched his first save of the season as he pitched three strong innings. Morreale allowed five hits, three runs and two walks. He recorded two strikeouts.

No. 2 nationally ranked Endicott overcame an early 2-0 deficit to secure its ninth win of the season on Sunday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Field Complex, 8-6. After Middlebury clubbed two solo homers in the bottom of the second to claim an early 2-0 advantage, the Gulls responded with a three run homer from Joey Frammartino in the top of the fourth to snag the lead. However, the Panthers knotted the score in the bottom half of the inning via a sac fly to right field. Charlie Hale limited the Panthers to just two earned runs in his 4.2 innings of work, striking out six along the way. The game remained a stalemate until the top of the sixth, when John Mulready crossed the plate on a wild pitch. The Blue and Green would add insurance in the eighth and ninth innings thanks to a Zach Stephenson sacrifice fly and a TJ Liponis 2-run triple. Liponis came around to score on a wild pitch as well, pushing the Endicott lead to 8-4 in the top of the ninth. Despite the Panthers scoring two runs in the bottom of the frame, Will Fox entered and recorded the final two outs, closing out the 8-6 victory for the Gulls.

Hobart scored three runs in the top of the ninth to rally past McDaniel 7-5 to take two of three games from the Green Terror this weekend. Sophomore Drew Bolduc's single with two outs and the bases loaded brought home the go-ahead and insurance run. Senior Ty Gallagher collected three hits, including a triple, drove in two runs and scored twice to lead the offense. Junior Nate Johnson and first-year Jack Byrnes each delivered a double for the Statesmen. Junior Nicholas Franceschi got the win, recording the final five outs without allowing a hit. "It was a great college baseball game," said Hobart head coach Brad Cook. "We showed a lot of fight and resilience. An absolute dog fight with four lead changes and a gritty win for the fellas. McDaniel is a good program and this was a great way to get our first series win. I'm looking forward to building upon this weekend."

The Knox Prairie Fire earned a come from behind 8-7 victory over Keuka on Sunday. The Wolves pushed across six runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead. Evan Laws drove in a pair of runs in the seventh and Etienne Thomas tied the game with a single driving home Laws. Thomas reached on a single in the top of the ninth and Thomas Wilmot tripled home pinch runner Tyler Thiem. Wilmot scored on an Andrew Garrett single to give Knox the 8-6 lead. Will Vines picked up the win on the mound, working around a double to allow one run in an inning and a third.

The Luther Norse posted its fourth win in a row following a 7-5 victory over Carleton this afternoon in Tucson, Arizona. The Norse scored once in the first, three in the third, once in the sixth and twice in the seventh to secure the victory. Gavin Scurr and Will Heitoff led the Norse attack driving in two runs each. Mark Prince, Joshua Matanich, and Garren Heinert were all credited with one RBI. Josh Stratton was credited with the win in relief. Stratton took over for Ryan Manternach midway through the fourth frame. Stratton allowed two runs on three hits, walked one and struck out three. Manternach pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowed three runs on six hits, walked one and also struck out three. Blake Jondle (2) was credited with the save. He faced seven batters, allowed one hit, walked one and struck out two.

No. 3 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace defeated North Central (Ill.) College by a score of 9-5 in a neutral site non-conference game at Nicolay Field. BW (12-3) was held to two hits until the sixth inning where the Yellow Jackets got the scoring started with three runs. North Central (4-10) answered back with five straight of their own in the seventh before the Yellow Jackets could score another five runs in the bottom of the frame and an insurance run in the eighth. Brandon Gelpi capped off the week going 3-for-5 with two RBI for a total of nine hits and six RBI over the past four games. Senior right-hander Tyler Walker stayed hot after throwing six scoreless innings allowing only four hits with six strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Jake Heatherington earned his third win of the season, a team best, after giving up only one hit and striking out one in 2.2 innings of relief.

Southwestern (7-10) handed the #12 Trinity University Tigers their fifth loss of the season this afternoon. The Pirates went down 0-2 on the series after close back-to-back three-run losses to the Tigers. Southwestern was able to find some luck with the bats on St. Patrick's Day, scoring nine runs in six different innings throughout the game. The Pirate defense held tough, keeping the final score line at 9-2 in favor of Southwestern. Jake Harris led the team in hits with three hits, also leading in RBIs with two. Maxwell Mims recorded two hits and was tied for the team lead with two RBIs. Carson Brown got the win on the mound today, allowing one earned run in 5.2 IP. The Pirates stole eight bases in the contest. James Vaquero and Jake Harris combined for half with two a piece. Ben Feuer notched two hits and one RBI, while Vaquero scored two runs. Brown threw 109 strikes in his outing, facing 27 batters.

Eastern Connecticut State battered seven Wittenberg University pitchers for 21 hits – belting six home runs in a game and three in one inning for the second time in the tournament – and clinched the Marietta College/BSN SPORTS Invitational title with its fourth victory in four days, 18-7, Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Park. A winner of five straight and six of its last eight since an 0-3 start, Eastern (6-5) climbed over the .500 mark for the first time this year. Wittenberg is 6-7. Trailing 3-0, the Warriors sent 13 batters to the plate in the third inning, scoring nine runs on eight hits , with No. 8 hitter Preston Irby and No. 9 hitter Mason Balmer blasting back-to-back home runs. The roundtripper was the second of the inning for Balmer, who began the barrage with a solo home run before closing the scoring with his second blast of the inning. Also homering in the game were senior leadoff hitter Zach Donahue and first-year players Ian Moser and Lucas Malave, the latter a junior transfer. The home run was the team-leading fourth of the year for Moser and second for Malave.

No. 16 Pomona-Pitzer ended their three-game series with
Tufts with a doubleheader sweep to take the series with a
10-0 win in game one and a 13-2 win in game two on
Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Penn State Harrisburg completed the weekend sweep of conference foe St. Mary's (Md.) with an 8-3 victory on Sunday afternoon. Kevin Lehner hit two home runs, while Tim Haftl launched the first long ball of his career. Christian Lubic II earned the win and struck out eight batters. Haftl finished 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. Lubic earned his first win of the season on the mound, striking out eight in 5.2 innings of work.

Catholic battled back to earn a 5-4, 11 inning walk-off victory over Juniata on Sunday afternoon, securing a sweep of its first conference series of the season. Steve Thomas played hero in the 11th inning, pushing a fly ball just deep enough into center field with the bases loaded to ensure Jack Elwell could beat the throw to the plate and secure the wall-off win for Catholic. Thomas picked up two hits on the day and scored one run in addition to his clutch RBI. Mac Meara played the role of the longman, relieving Cardman to the tune of 3.1 innings pitched and five strikeouts. Ryan O'Keefe entered to get the final two outs of the eighth inning, and did so in the most efficient way possible, only facing one batter as he induced a ground-ball double play to end the inning. Usual closer Brendan Martin entered to hold the opponents in the ninth inning and remained on to do the same in the 10th before freshman Antonio Tufano pitched the 11th. The freshman did not allow a hit and earned the first win of his collegiate career for his efforts. The Catholic bullpen combined for 7.0 innings pitch, nine strikeouts, only three hits and allowed no runs.

Saint John's (Minn.) split a pair of seven-inning games with Wesleyan (Conn.) on Sunday. Wesleyan out-hit SJU (8-5 overall) by a 12-4 margin in game one's 5-2 loss, but the Johnnies held the Cardinals to one hit in a 4-1 win in game two for Wesleyan's first loss of the season (7-1 record). Senior Griffin Larson improved to 2-0 on the year with another dazzling performance on the mound. He struck out five and issued the lone hit in six innings of work. Larson retired his final 14 batters in order. Wesleyan entered game two batting .338 (77-for-228) with a .557 slugging percentage and .429 on-base percentage through the first seven contests. The reigning MIAC Pitcher of the Week, senior Jeremy Klick set down the Cardinals 1-2-3 for his second save of the season.

The 19th-ranked Benedictine University baseball team did not trail for long on Sunday, capturing a pair of one-run decisions with a 3-2 victory over UW-Oshkosh and an 8-7 11-inning win over Millikin to move to 11-1 on the year. Benedictine jumped ahead in the first inning of both contests. DeShawnte Carraway singled home two in the top of the first in the opener. Leading 2-1, Ryan Doubek added a needed insurance run in the sixth with a two-out RBI single. Oshkosh had the tying run at third in the bottom of the ninth but Austin Pizer induced a double play to preserve the win. Benedictine and Oshkosh played two games decided by a total of three runs this weekend. Nick Kosmetatos earned the win against Oshokosh by working six innings and allowing one run. Benedictine tallied 12 hits, all singles, with five players recording multiple hits. Kevin Bushnell logged three hits while Carraway, Doubek, George Betevis and Anthony Lenza all tallied a pair. Facing the hosts in the second game, Benedictine scored another run in the first when Logan Gregorio homered. The team put two on the board in the second and three in the fourth to lead 6-0. Millikin put six runs on the board in the eighth to open a 7-6 lead but Benedictine came from behind again to force extras when Betevis drilled a solo homer with one out. Justin Nonnenmann homered in the 11th to post the win.

No. 6 Denison finished up its run at the Adrian Tournament with a 3-0 record after grinding out a 5-3 win over the hosts from Adrian College on a cold Sunday afternoon in Michigan. Helping lead the Big Red to the low-scoring victory was the combination of George Viebrock (2-0), Manny Nager, and Jack Rollo, the latter of which earned his first-career save as a freshman. Viebrock earned the start and allowed seven hits, two runs and zero walks while striking out nine in five innings. Viebrock also finished with two pickoffs in the contest while his catcher, Ravin, threw out both would-be base stealers against him. Nager allowed the solo home run but finished with just one hit and no walks allowed in two innings while striking out three, and then Rollo pitched the final two innings allowing two hits, no runs and no walks.

Dominican University got a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning, but it was all Buena Vista from there as the Beavers rolled to an 11-1 (7 inn.) victory over the Stars on Sunday afternoon to wrap up the weekend trip. The only blemish for BVU starter Mason Gehling on the day was the two-out solo blast in the first that gave the Stars the early 1-0 lead. The senior pitched six strong innings, allowing just the one run and three hits while striking out seven and walking two, as he improves to 3-1 overall. Freshman Jake Eddie pitched a scoreless seventh for the Beavers, allowing just one hit and worked out of a bases loaded jam with a strikeout to end the game. Buena Vista finished with 12 hits in the game but stranded 11. The Stars were held to just three hits and stranded five.

 

Rochester pounded out a total of 27 hits, but was only able to salvage a doubleheader split against St. John Fisher on Sunday afternoon at Towers Field. St. John Fisher was able to win game one by a 10-6 score, before the Yellowjackets responded with a 14-5 drubbing in game number two. The Cardinals used a pair of big hits to power to the victory, as Brian Norsen clubbed a grand slam in the second inning, while later on in the eighth, Mario Cubello produced a 3-run shot. Rochester's Besztery had a monster game in the night cap, lacing a pair of inside-the-park home runs, one of which was a grand slam to lead the Yellowjackets. Besztery finished with 2 hits, both homers, with 3 runs and 5 RBI.

No. 17 Misericordia swept a doubleheader from Arcadia, Saturday at Tambur Field to take the MAC Freedom opening series. The Cougars came-from-behind to win both games, 12-4, 10-6. In game one, Brock Bollinger and Joe Comins both had two hits and three RBI while Garrett McIlhenney, Brooks Kanwisher, Gabe Bunn and Owen Cordner all had two hits. Steve Rinda tossed a five-hitter to earn the complete-game win. In game two, Connor Maryniak worked six innings to earn the win and helped his own cause with two homers and four RBI. Bryan Henry worked the final three innings to get the save. Brooks Kanwisher had three hits and Joe Comins added two hits and Owen Cordner drove in two runs.

John Jay returned to Maimonides Park for the first time this season and split their non-conference doubleheader against Purchase on Sunday afternoon. The Bloodhounds dropped game one, 17-4, but rallied in the nightcap for an 11-4 victory. After both teams scored a run in their respective first innings, the Panthers scored 14 runs over the next three innings, highlighted by a seven-run third and five-run fourth in defeating the Bloodhounds, 17-4, in the opener of Sunday's twinbill. The Bloodhounds held a 7-1 lead heading into the fourth before the Panthers cut the deficit to three in their half of the fourth. In the bottom of the sixth, John Jay added four more scores to earn the split of Sunday's twinbill, defeating Purchase, 11-4.

 

Twenty-five hours after walking off against Rochester, Allegheny did so again, this time beating Oberlin College by an 8-7 final score on Sunday evening. The 11-inning marathon not only featured another walk-off victory but also included a handful of home runs, plenty of small ball, bouts of strong pitching, and a 35-minute weather delay due to a near white-out snow squall. Pregame precipitation didn't affect first pitch, but by the third inning, a passing storm turned Robert M. Garbark Field into a brief winter wonderland. Facing an 0-2 count with two outs, Tyson Bryant-Dawson played the role of hero with a sharp liner back up the middle, driving Alejandro Samayoa home for the winning run.

 

Springfield College senior Joseph Traversa hit the game-tying grand slam in game one and the walk-off single in game two as the Pride swept Elms College, 8-5, and 4-3 (9 Inn.) in a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon on Archie Allen Field. Traversa went 3-for-4 with a grand slam in game one, while Ryan Sorgi went 2-for-2 with two RBI, two walks and a run and Andrew McCarty added two hits and two runs for the Pride in the opener. Nate Kelleher-Mochak earned the win (2-1) in relief as he pitched four innings, struck out four and walked two without surrendering a hit for Springfield. Springfield produced 11 hits in the night cap as Michael Lepere led the way for the Pride with three knocks. Max Giacco came into a tie game out of the pen and earned the win (2-0) as he allowed just one hit in seven at-bats to give Springfield a chance to walk it off.

Senior Kieran O'Brien recorded career-highs in runs (2), hits (2), and RBI (3) as Stevens defeated Montclair State 14-6 Sunday afternoon in a non-conference contest. Graduate student Leo Bristow (1-1) earned first win of the season. He pitched the final four and two-thirds innings and allowed four runs on eight hits. Sophomore William Sotiropoulos started for Stevens, allowing two runs on three hits in 2.2 innings of work. He also struck out two and walked four. Junior Matt Villapiano also saw action for Stevens, as he pitched 1.1 innings. He allowed no base runners. The Ducks (9-5) have now won three-straight after losing five in a row. Stevens improves to 8-3 in non-conference games. The Ducks are also a perfect 4-0 in true road games this year. With the win, Stevens improves to 4-4 all-time against the Red Hawks. The Ducks have also won three of the last four against Montclair State. The Red Hawks fell to 12-2 with the loss.

Marietta scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat Wittenberg, 9-6, Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Park. The Pioneers are 7-8 on the season. Wittenberg falls to 6-8 overall. Jones had a pinch hit single to lead off the bottom of the eighth. Cael Magill bunted Jones into scoring position. Alex Richter was hit by a pitch and Ben Kaplin singled to right scoring Jones with the winning run. Richter stole third and Kaplin swiped second. Cooper Fiehrer followed with a two-run single through the right side of the infield for a 9-6 Pioneers lead. Gabe Torres (2-0) shutout the Tigers over the last two innings for the win. Torres worked 2.0 innings with one walk and two strikeouts. Forrest Havanis started and worked 1.1 innings allowing three runs on four hits. Austin Ziance gave up one run on three hits in 4.2 innings of work. Jacob Rocky allowed two runs on two hits in 1.0 inning of relief.

Gustavus split its doubleheader Sunday at Washington University, ending the four-game series 1-3 against the Bears. The Gusties claimed today's first game 6-1 but dropped the second 3-2, moving to 8-5 overall. The Gusties gained a 6-0 lead through six innings. WashU managed just the single run in the seventh and never challenged. Game two was differnt as the Bears scored first and a seventh inning run was the difference maker. The Gusties had the tying run in scoring position in the ninth inning, but a strikeout ended the game.

Elmhurst picked up their first two victories of the 2024 campaign Sunday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader against Bard College, 17-11 and 8-2. Elmhurst (2-8) broke through offensively, scoring a combined 25 runs across both games, and used effective pitching in game two to secure both ends of a sunny afternoon doubleheader in Florida against Bard (4-5). Javier Cervantes stepped up to the plate for Elmhurst, going a combined 3-for-7 with four RBI, one double, and one triple, while John Swiderek tallied four RBI on the day. On the mound, Joseph Ingratta picked up the win in game one to improve to 1-1 on the season, while Cole Bozzi pitched a gem in game two, going the full seven innings and giving up seven hits and two runs while adding four strikeouts to improve to 1-2.

William Paterson (5-6) cruised to an 11-0 win over Ohio Northern (6-7) on the second day of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The game was ended after seven innings due to the 10-run lead rule. WP blew the game open in the third with a six-run frame. The Pioneers extended their win streak to four as they reached double-digit runs for the third time in its last four outings. Metzger tossed a seven-inning complete game shutout while striking out six batters and allowing six hits.

In danger of losing three in a row against conference opponent Pacific Lutheran, George Fox used some St. Patrick's Day luck with a walk-off walk in the ninth inning to secure an 8-7 win. The Bruins got three huge outs from righty Austin McQuilliams and went into the bottom half of the ninth with three outs left to take the game back. Fox got off to a great start: Carson Coulter got on base with a hit-by-pitch, Kaden Oshiro walked, followed by another hit-by-pitch to load the bases with no outs for Mason Eastman – who was walking up to the plate with three hits already on the day. Eastman wasted no time tying the game on the first pitch with a sacrifice fly. With one out and runners on the corners, Ty Davis drew yet another walk to load the bases for Jared Miller. Miller proceeded to draw a walk in five pitches, sending the winning run home. The Bruins walked off the game with a walk, their third of the ninth inning.

Graduate student right-hander Daniel Johnson got the win in game one to break the program's career wins record and Scranton (8-3, 2-1 Landmark) split a doubleheader with the Elizabethtown Blue Jays (8-6, 1-2 Landmark) on Sunday at Boyd Stadium in Elizabethtown. The Royals notched a 10-6 victory in game one, but dropped a 14-4 decision in the nightcap. Scranton broke the game with five runs in the eighth inning and clinched the series with the 10-6 victory after taking the opener by a score of 5-4 on Saturday. Johnson recorded his third win of the season for Scranton as he allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits while walking two and fanning five over five plus innings. The victory marked the 19th of his career, surpassing the previous record of 18 that had been set by Drew Morano (1989-92). The Blue Jays took control of the game with three runs apiece in the third and fifth innings as the Royals dropped a 14-4 decision in game two on Sunday.

UW-Stevens Point (1-3) scored all 13 runs in the final five innings to rally for a 13-9 victory over Ramapo (3-4) in the opener for both teams in the RussMatt Invitational. Kamden Oliver recorded three hits, including his first home run of the season, and drove in four. Anthony Tomczak and Trent Van Ess combined for five hits, five runs and each had two RBI. Bradley Comer had two hits, drew two walks and scored three runs. Matt Baumann hit the other home run on the day, a solo shot in the seventh. Connor Olson drove in two, had hit, drew a walk and scored a run. Nick Paulsen struck out two and went 4.2 innings in the start. Joe Schneider recorded the only other strikeout on the bump for UWSP in 0.2 frames of relief. Bryce Ehr recorded his first career win with a scoreless eighth.
