Allegheny Outlasts Oberlin, Mother Nature For 8-7 Extra-Inning Victory

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Twenty-five hours after walking off against the University of Rochester, the Allegheny College baseball team did so again, this time beating Oberlin College by an 8-7 final score on Sunday evening.

The 11-inning marathon not only featured another walk-off victory but also included a handful of home runs, plenty of small ball, bouts of strong pitching, and a 35-minute weather delay due to a near white-out snow squall. Pregame precipitation didn't affect first pitch, but by the third inning, a passing storm turned Robert M. Garbark Field into a brief winter wonderland.

Tied at 6-all heading into extra innings, Oberlin (6-6) took the lead in the top of the 10th with a two-out double. But the Gators (7-5) responded in the bottom of the 10th to force another frame. Back-to-back walks to Patrick Page (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) and Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) loaded the bases, and with two outs, Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) was plunked to force home the tying run.

Bryant-Dawson then moved from the outfield to the mound, and despite a lead-off double from Oberlin's Grayson Black, Allegheny escaped the inning unscathed. The bottom of the 11th began with a pair of infield singles from Alejandro Samayoa (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay Cross River) and Anthony Maslo (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny). With one away, the Yeomen intentionally walked Jonathan Sharp (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) to set up a possible double play.

Facing an 0-2 count with two outs, Bryant-Dawson played the role of hero with a sharp liner back up the middle, driving Samayoa home for the winning run.

Most of Allegheny's eight runs were recorded in the third and fourth innings, and three came via the long ball. Just as the snow began to consume the ballpark, Bryant-Dawson slugged a solo shot into left field. In the fourth, Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) launched a two-run blast down the left-field line, which gave the Gators a 5-4 advantage that lasted until the seventh inning.
