ABILENE, Texas – Mitch Wilson has been named by Associate Vice President of Athletics Dr. John Neese as the new head baseball coach for Hardin-Simmons University.

Wilson comes to Hardin-Simmons after serving as an assistant coach at conference foe Mary Hardin-Baylor. He has been instrumental in the turn around in that program and brings a high level of energy and excitement to the Cowboy program.

"I am excited to have the opportunity to run my own program at Hardin-Simmons, said Wilson. "HSU is a special place and I feel very fortunate to start my head coaching career here. I have learned so much from my many coaching mentors through the years and hope to blend it all together into my own style. I am passionate about investing in and developing young men through the game of baseball. At the end of the day, our program will be about the players and for the players. Go Cowboys!"

Wilson has spent the last five years as the head assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at UMHB. During that time, he coached 15 all-ASC performers, including the ASC player of the year in 2022 and 2024. In four full seasons (the first year was the COVID-shortened season), UMHB more than doubled its wins from the previous four years 85-39.

As a player, he was a standout at Concordia University-Chicago. He was a four-time all-region selection and was an All-American in 2017. He led CUC to two trips to the Division III College World Series. He was named to the all-decade team by D3baseball.com for the 2010s. He was a Gold Glove winner at second base and finished his career with a .351 batting average.

"We had a strong field of candidates and Mitch came to the top of the list," said Neese. "His enthusiasm and passion for the game and his success at the Division III level as a player, graduate assistant and assistant coach were desirable traits. Everyone we talked to while vetting the candidates spoke highly of his ability to teach the game, develop a winning culture and develop young men both on the field and off."

"Hardin-Simmons is a very exciting university to become a part of," said Wilson. "HSU has a great combination of academics, faith, and highly successful athletics to give student-athletes a well-rounded college experience. HSU athletics has a high standard for success on and off the field. Our baseball program will strive to meet that standard on a daily basis."

He replaces Steve Coleman who retired after the season after 27 years at the helm of the Cowboy program.
