Marymount takes down Catholic on Sunday

St. Olaf College began its season by sweeping Simpson College by scores of 5-0 and 13-4 on Sunday at McBride Field. After being forced to wait one extra day to open its season due to cold weather, St. Olaf (2-0) got a 12-strikeout performance from senior Jacob Fickenscher over 5.0 shutout innings in game one and recorded four multi-run innings in game two to sweep Simpson (1-3). Fickenscher's 12 strikeouts in the opener were a career-high total for the lefthander.

Marymount took on Catholic University and with timely hitting and shutdown pitching pushed the Saints to a 5-4 win over the Cardinals, improving their overall record to 8-1 on the season. Tied in the second, the Saints added with another run in the bottom of the second, third and fourth to extend the Saints lead to 5-2. Catholic scored a pair in the top of the fifth to cut the Marymount lead to just one but Liam Progulske and Michael Arce combined for 4.0 shut out innings out of the pen to close the door. Click here for photos

Efficient pitching proved helpful for Elizabethtown as they opened up their spring break trip with a split against Heidelberg, losing 1-0 in game one and winning 3-0 in the nightcap. Quinten Perilli notched career-high six strikeouts in game one while Kyle Mulville recorded a career-high nine strikeouts while also tallying his 100th on his career. The first game against Heidelberg was scoreless until the final inning as Elizabethtown had their chance to score in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded the Student Princes scored on a walk-off wild pitch to win, 1-0. Elizabethtown spread out their three runs in game two, scoring in the first, sixth, and eighth innings ion support of Perilli's shutout.

Saint John's started its 2025 season with a sweep of Luther, 3-2 and 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at Haugen Field at Becker Park. Four SJU (2-0 overall) pitchers combined to hold Luther (0-5 overall) to a .233 batting average, while the Johnnies produced clutch hitting late in both games for the sweep. SJU erased a 2-1 deficit with a pair of runs in the fifth inning for the win in game one.Reed Marquardt moved to third on a groundout and scored when senior first baseman Owen Best laced a 3-2 pitch up the middle for what proved to be the game-winning run. Helfmann smoked a 0-2 pitch over the left-field fence for a two-run homer – the first of his collegiate career – to break a 2-2 stalemate in the bottom of the seventh inning. The blast proved to be the game-winning runs and provided the needed spark for an offense that stranded a runner on third base in each of the first four innings.

Marian (2-0) defeated Allegheny 7-6 and 15-2 to open the season in the first two games between the two programs. In game one, errors resulted in runs and the Sabres got walk-off hit by pitch to take the opener. Game two was earned with an offensive explosion that put Marian ahead 8-1 afrer four. Marian was able to break the game open scoring seven runs in the top of the sixth.

Kalamazoo College completed the three-game sweep of Earlham with a 14-3 win Sunday afternoon. After scoring the first run of the game in the top of the fourth, Kalamazoo trailed 3-1 after Earlham scored three in the bottom half. Kalamazoo added a run in the fifth and sixth innings to even it up at 3-3 before scoring two in the seventh, four in the eighth and five in the ninth to take the 14-3 win. Kalamazoo finished with 16 hits in the game compared to seven by Earlham. Kalamazoo tied a school record with 12 stolen bases in the game.

Cortland finished 3-0 at the Shenandoah University Mr. V Memorial Tournament to improve to 5-2 on the season. Cortland defeated Immaculata, 17-5 in seven innings, on Saturday, and on Sunday the Red Dragons shut out Wittenberg, 5-0, and defeated the host Hornets, 15-6. Luis Misla allowed four hits and no walks and struck out 10 batters in five and a third innings to earn the victory. He combined on the shutout with Matthew Nochowitz and Nick Hanson. Wittenberg had scored 44 runs over its first five games. In the final game for Cortland, the Red Dragons again got off to a quick start with seven runs in the top of the first inning. The Hornets (7-4) pulled back to within 8-4 after six innings, but the Red Dragons plated four in the seventh, one in the eighth and two in the ninth to take control.

Saint Mary's (Minn.) (1-1) opened its spring break trip in Florida and season opener with a doubleheader split against Illinois College. The Cardinals lost the first game 6-2 but responded with a dominant 9-0 victory in game two. In the first game of the season, the scoring started early for the Blueboys after a home run in the opening inning. The Cardinals responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame but Illinois College quickly regained control in the second and seventh inning, adding two more runs in the second and never looking back after three given up in the final inning. In the bounce back win, Riley Bauman recorded three hits, including a double and a triple, while driving in two runs and scoring twice. Hanneman hit his first home run of the season, with one RBI, and two runs scored. On the mound, Andrew Milner was effective as a starter, pitching two innings without allowing a run and striking out three batters. The seventh inning sealed the game for the Cardinals with the Cardinals securing a decisive 9-0 victory over the Blueboys.

Misericordia University won its fifth straight game with a 9-3 win over Mass. Maritime, Sunday in Fort Pierce, FL. Brian Korchok hit a first-inning grand slam and Jack Regenye and Brock Bollinger combined for five hits and six runs scored. Luke Leventhall worked five innings to earn the win.
Evan Wittig, Zak Lussier and Dante Viola combined to throw four innings of relief without allowing an earned run.

Denison University closed out their three-game road series with the Roanoke College Maroons with a rubber match after the teams split Saturday's doubleheader. The Big Red came out on top after defeating the Maroons 10-0 in game three. The Roanoke Maroons showed that any game could be won no matter the circumstances, after a walkoff victory in extra innings in Saturday's double header. The Big Red negated any momentum their opponents may have had from the day before with a slow and methodical victory in the series rubber match. Sophomore righty Peter Lemke picked up his first win of the season after a near flawless six inning performance. Lemke only allowed two base runners and retired six by strikeout. Lemke's classmate, Sam Larson, took over on the mound in the seventh inning. Through the final three innings, Larson allowed zero hits and struck out four batters. This game marks the first shutout for Denison of the year.

Seventh-ranked Salisbury University scored 26 times over two games against the Oswego State Lakers, winning the opener 10-3 and the nightcap 16-6 in eight innings on Sunday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium. In the opener, the Lakers cut their deficit in half in the top of the sixth but Salisbury cashed in a run in the bottom of the sixth and on a bases-loaded opportunity in the seventh, building the lead to 8-1. The teams traded two runs each in their final turns at-bat thanks to mutual errors, but it wasn't enough to rattle SU starter Cole Williams, who pitched into the ninth for the first time in his career and earned his first win of the season. In Game two, the Sea Gulls brought the party to the plate early, sending 17 men to the plate in the first and scoring 11 runs on eight hits and three Laker errors to go up 11-0. Danny Sheeler provided the exclamation point with a long two-run home run to right field – his first of the season – as part of SU's second double-digit first inning in three games. OSU clawed back a pair in the fourth but never got close as Salisbury secured the sweep.

The Augustana Vikings split the second day of a three-game weekend in Rantoul on Sunday, defeating the Northland Lumberjacks 11-6 before falling to the Loras Duhawks by a score of 6-3. In the first game against Northland, the Jacks got on the board first after a two-run homer to grab the early lead but the game was 3-3 after three. After four, the Vikings moved ahead 8-4. Northland tallied a run in the eighth but the Vikings moved the difference back to six after Michael Aragon scored off a single to left from Coon. The Jacks scored another in the top of the ninth, but Augie held the five-point advantage to take the 11-6 game. In the nightcap, Loras grabbed the early advantage in the second game after putting up three runs in the bottom of the first. The Duhawks tallied two more in the second inning to move the score to 5-0. After a pair of scoreless innings, Loras brought in another run home in the fifth to lead 6-0. Augustana was only able to plate three and fell to Loras. 

On home-opening weekend, University of Lynchburg notched three wins over York to sweep the series this weekend on James C. Fox Field. The Hornets wrapped up the weekend by securing a 5-1 victory over York in the final game of the series. In the first inning, Brandon Garcia scored on a double play. York responded in the sixth with a walk that brought in a run. Lynchburg regained the advantage in the sixth as Sean Pokorak doubled to score Ben Jones. In the seventh, Joe Munitz singled to drive in Logan Webster, followed by a wild pitch that allowed Garcia to score. A final run in the eighth sealed the 5-1 win.

Tyler Cannon drove in three runs and Phil Sedalis had three hits to lead #23 Rowan over Hampden-Sydney, 8-3 as the Profs (2-1) won two in the three-game weekend series. Mark Grubb posted his first career victory in relief of starter Zach Coluccio, who went 4.0 innings and struck out three. Grubb tossed two innings and struck out three while keeping the Tigers off the board. Back-to-back triples by Cannon and Sedalis in the fourth extended Rowan's lead to 5-1. The Profs scored again in the fifth on consecutive doubles by Damon Suriani and Harcourt. The Tigers got one back in the seventh but Rowan closed it out with two in the eighth. Sedalis doubled and eventually scored on a bunt by Brayden Davis, with Jason Schooley driving in the final run as he singled to score Jason Morgan.

George Fox wrapped up their three game series against Linfield on Sunday, using an excellent defensive effort to win 3-0 against the Wildcats. The game was clearly a pitcher's duel from the opening toss, as both the Bruins and Wildcats struggled to put a man on base. Bruin starter Lucas Plenert and the Wildcats' Jake Swenson battled it out on the pitch, with neither player allowing a run through seven innings. Things started rolling in the top of the eighth when Jackson Bucholz and Shayde Koga were hit by back-to-back pitches, giving the Bruins life to lead off the inning. the free bases resulte in a three run inning and the winning margin.

Christopher Newport infield turned three double plays behind starting pitcher Chase Hustead (1-1) as the 11th-ranked Captains rolled by Saint Elizabeth, 8-2, at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Sunday. Thanks to the stellar defense, Hustead faced just two batters over the minimum through eight innings of work to earn his first career win with the Captains. Through the first five innings against the Eagles, Hustead allowed just two baserunners and erased both of them on the basepaths to face just 15 batters. With the pitching and defense keeping Saint Elizabeth off the board, the Captains' offense scored two runs in the first and two more in the fifth. CNU continued to tack on runs and Connor Barry came on to finish out the game on the mound for CNU, making his first career appearance.
